Hi,

I had a chance to quickly do some test shots with my new ringflash and just wanted some input on how to make the images look better. I'm looking for comments on the lighting not the models and their poses:). Its my first time using it, so any help/suggestions you can give will help. Anything obvious? but doesn't seem like there's anything complicated about it.

(these were actually shot on my friend's nikon, as my xti is waiting on a hotshoe to pc sync adaptor to get the flash working)

no processing other than WB to flash from auto

it's too bad no one posted here to try and help you out.

I think the biggest thing that could help with shooting with a ring flash is to have your subject move further away from the wall/background to reduce the shadow he casts on it.

The shadow will still be there with the ringflash no matter the distance between subject and BG.

I would back up and use a longer lense. 85mm or longer. This will define the shadow halo if that's what your looking for.

Then you could seperate the bg from subject and meter for subject to make the bg darker. Once you take the pics just bump up the contrast a little.

It helps to frame whole body or at least 3/4 instead of portrait framing.

Use shiny materials and vaseline.

Edit: also if it's just you in your room snapping pics with a new toy it wont amount to much. What I mean to say is, plan a theme, get a model, make something of the shoot. You will get out of it what you put into it.

I can't help, they look good, but those two could be a demo on how to eliminate eye glass glare in flash photography.
