I just got a 20D about a week ago. The firmware version is 1.0.5. I have gone to the "Be-bit" site for the updated firmware file, downloaded the file to the formatted CF card, but when I put it back in the camera and turn the power on, nothing happens. It is supposed to open a window in the LCD monitor and begin the process.

Canon support doesn't offer any help other than to say send it to the service center. I really don't want to do that----I just got the thing, and I want to shoot some BB games coming up. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

You need to make sure that you have extracted the .fir file from the compressed download by double clicking on the download, and then putting the .fir file in the root directory of your CFcard and not in a folder.

That for the response. Yeach, I dId that. The card shows two files---the .fir file and a folder named "DCIM".

The instructions said to make sure the battery had a full charge. Mine doesn't, but if it's enough to power up and capture/view pictures I figured it should be OK. I'll try that next, but I'm reluctant to charge a batterey that still has some capacity left. Maybe it doens't matter if you short charge this kind.

Any more thoughts greatly appreciated.

Yeah, just go ahead and charge the battery. The type of rechargeables used in you camera are very resistant to picking up a memory so concerns like that that used to be a major issue are almost gone.

Also, make sure the .fir file is the only thing on there. The camera may be seeing the DCIM folder and assuming its a normal photo containing CF card.

Well, did you go into the Menu to select the Firmware version option from where you can elect to install the firmware?

See here for full detailed install instructions:

I just updated both my 20D and my 1D MkII---literally just (within the last hour).

I had no trouble with either one. The important thing is to follow their directions to the letter. Don't skip any steps. I'm sure a half-charged battery would work just fine, but they don't want anyone starting the update with a nearly wasted battery that expires halfway throught the operation. That would likely leave a completely dead camera that could only be revived by the good folks at Canon.

BTW, I seem to remember some people having trouble installing earlier updates while the battery grip was installed on the camera. I did it tonight with the grip on, and had no problems.

Thanks for the response on my short charging conern, Citizen. And PacAce, I did print out those instructions when I tried this before, but they say that the LCD monitor will open a screen about six sections after you turn the camera on after inserting the card with the file on it. At least that's the way it reads to me.

But I tried your suggestion by going to the Menu, and it worked just fine. Thanks a lot! Wonder why Canon support couldn't tell me that. This forum is great.
