HELLO I HAVE ENJOYED PHOTOGRAPHY FOR MANY YEARS, AND FEEL I LEARN SOMETHING EVERY TIME I SHOOT A ROLL OF FILM. LATELY I HAVE SPENT ALL MY TIME SHOOTING DIGITAL AND LOVE THE INSTANCE RESULTS. I JUST PICKED UP A 1D MARKII AND "WOW" . IN ADDITION A 70-200 F/2.8 L IS USM, 100 F/2.8 MACRO, 85 F/1.2 L AND A 580EX. NOW I AM WAITING FOR A 1DS MARK II FROM MY DEALER. MY QUESTION IS AS A LONG TIME USER OF NIKON EQ. I AM NOT UP ON CANON GLASS. I ENJOY TAKING PHOTO'S. LATELY I HAVE FOCUSED ON EQUESTRIAN JUMPING, CHILDREN AND NATURE ( ANIMALS & BIRDS). I HAVE A DEALER LOOKING FOR A 200 F/1.8L AND WILL GET A 300 F/2.8L IS, AND A 600 F/4 L IS . HAVING NEVER USED DIGITAL FULL FRAME AND READING REVIEWS THAT THE 1DS MKTII REQUIRES PREMIUM L GLASS I FELT THE NEED FOR ADVICE ON A WIDE
ANGLE LENSE. I FEEL THE 24 F/1.4 L IS MY ONLY CHOICE. AS I QUESTION THE QUALITY OF THE 16-35 F/2.8L OR THE 17-40 F/4 L . I REALLY LIKE THE 14 F2.8L BUT NOT SUREOF A ULTRA WIDE QUALITY. ALSO I LIKE THE MTF OF THE 135 F/2L. IF ANYONE HAS WORKING FEELINGS ON ANY OF THIS EQUIPMENT OR THAT I SHOULD CONSIDER OTHER EQUIPMENT PLEASE ADVISE. THANKS HUGO

The only thing I can contribute is, get your 200 f/1.8L from chamcamera on ebay. He sells about 8 of these a month for $3000-4000 a piece. Many people on FM have purchased from him, and at least twice a month he offers one that is in mint, like new condition. He has one up there now that looks flawless. Actually, I just went back to get the link for you, and the same guy just snatched up TWO that chamcamera had up there using buy it now in the past couple of hours. That's a first.

Anyway, here's the good one that just ended. Check out the detailed photos. Not a nick on the thing:

You'll get much less help when you type in all capitals, as it comes accross as shouting. I didn't even read your post, for example.

600 f/2.8L?

Don't think so.

God, that would be a monster, wouldn't it?

You would need a wheelbarrow or a pickup truck to move it around.

You're out of my league, but just out of curiosity, why question the quality of the 16-35 2.8? I've read nothing but glowing reviews.

If you still have Nikon lenses, there are adapters that allow you to use them on the Canon EOS system, because the distance to the focal plane of Nikon is longer than Canon. The lens will be manual focus then, of course.

This also allows mounting various medium format lenses like the Zeiss 20 mm or 21 mm lenses that I have heard are not half bad. Those medium format lenses you could even mount with a tilt/shift adapter which might help you with ultrawide lenses.

Google is your friend. There are also some threads to this on FM and photo.net.

Best regards,
Andy

Aaah guys-there was no 600/2.8 mentioned

Hugo, the little help i can give is that most say the 16-35/2.8 and 17-40/4 are VERY similar optically. It's more a choice of maximum aperture verses $ ;)

fredmiranda.com and photo.net are two good places to ask about the best wide glass if you have no luck here

The 135/2 is indeed a stunner of a lens judging by the praise it's owners give it.

I do recall michael richemann at luminouslandscape.com showing an image from the 14mm/1Ds.It had some minor chromatic aberation.
The thing is-what other choices have you got?
I guess you could use nikon wide lenses with an adapter as andy says but it's not allways handy to do without AF,etc

He fixed it. His original post is accurately quoted in Roanjohn's post.

Regardless, even the f/4 version is a brute. We are dealing with a very wealthy person here, folks.

Long lenses would be a must for equestrian events. Those critters cover a lot of territory. I would think the 1D MkII and the 600 f/4 would be good enough to let you see what the horse had for breakfast.

No kidding .....

And when I win the lottery, I'm going to have Canon build me a 600 2.8 .... and then I'll worry about how you actually move it ....

And what about the Canon EF 1200mm f5.6 L USM lens? That's a cracker .

Check out eBay. Someone in the UK is selling a converter (auction ending in the next day or so) allowing Nikon AI, AIS and AF(D) lenses to be used on any EOS camera. Can't understand why anybody would want to do that ;).

First I apologize for the all caps post. Second I should have proofed before the post regarding the 600 f/2.8 l is error.

Phil Thankyou for sharing your knowledge on chamcamera. Last week same seller was selling a 200 F/1.8 (buy now for $3799.00). I needed more info. on the seller, but someone grabed it at the buy now price. Again thank you this is what forums are all about.

Andy Thank you for your reply. I had considered a converter, but af has me spoiled.
I do use mf in Macro and portriat. It was hard selling my nikon collection, but Canon is a better fit for me now.

I do not have a web site. I am not a pro, I do not print any photos smaller than 8X10 and give most away to friends and family. I do enjoy quality in life as we all should.

Again Thanks too All Hugo :)

P.s. I just noticed the captions ( pop -ups) with the smilie faces. I think I used a sarcastic smilie on my first post .... that was not my intent . I just liked the smilie, and I'm a very happy canon user. Sorry I don't post much. I am new on this site and have enjoyed reading many posts/replys.

The best place in the UK for adaptors, etc. is SRB (http://www.srbfilm.co.uk/). If they haven't got it, noboday has. They even make you one custom if it doesn't exist.

A Nikonian winding us all up??
A windup, or... just nostalgia? http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I have been dedicated to Canon since I traded my Nikon F80 in for an EOS 3 four years ago, adding a 20D at the tail end of last year. However, it's hard to forget being a Nikonian for over two decades. Wonderful memories are still flooding back when I take my '79 Nikon FE from it's glass cabinet http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif.

Canon definitely rules, and apart from the odd outing using my FE to take photos using B&W film, it is happily retired, sitting behind glass next to my vintage rangefinders http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif.
