Another autumn pic I took last weekend.
I like the composition, although I am unsure whether I should photoshop it to increase the color saturation of the green cloth.
I think the slight vignette effect of my lens actually helps the picture.

Comments?

That bicycle has certainly seen better days.

My first thought was that the wheel to the bottom right should be removed. The two circles of the bike wheels should draw the eye - but the third circle is a distraction.

But hey what do I know? :o)

I was thinking the same. Remove the rim, cloth and frame and just keep the bike in the leaves. Then crop it so that there is just a boredr of rocks.
This is a real artsy photo.

Hi Patrick,

Everyone is exactly right... you only want the bicycle and leaves. Remove the extra frame, metal rod, cloth and tire rim -- along with the tree branch near the seat and the one crossing the front tire and any other straight-line items I'm missing -- and you'll have a great shot.

Hi everyone,
thank you all for your comments. I have followed your suggestions and cropped the bicycle tightly.

Unfortunately golden autumn has given way to foggy november, so I can´t reshoot the picture. I´m still thinking about clonestamping away the lower right branch though.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I actually like the original better. It may have needed a slight camera slant to left in composition and a bit more distance, but I like the way it resembles an archeological excavation.

Have you tried an evening/night shot of this, where light comes more from side?

Now that I've seen the cropped version I have to agree with Pekka.

Hi

I think the crop version is too tight.
As it's a scrap area I don't mind the other bits too much.
I'd have cropped it a little but not this much.

Also as Pekka suggests, you could use light and color temperature to greater advantage by shooting earlier or later in the day. Maybe getting more contrast between light and shaded areas.

Ps the bike looks more dead than sleeping !

Yes, I should have tried out different times of the day / night or experimented with physically altering the composition. Lesson learned.

Working with what I have got, I tried different crops and color variations like B&W, but I think I will stick with the original.

I know the feeling, I walk by junked cars and stuff in the woods every day . Litter from the past.

In my opinion these are difficult objects to fill any screen! They are usually not objects of joy or wonderment. (Take a look at real posts by CONK of objects that have reached the shores of the river and ocean that he frequents. They have a hard time reporting their past to a viewer in the present.)

Along this line, the best "rusted object" photo that I have seen (and I do not go looking for them) is the Kodak tips photo that was shot thru a rusted car window. And in this setting, the window does not dominate the image.

Needless to say, I have stopped by my rusted objects with photography in mind, but I never mustered the skill or framing required to lift these subjects out of their teminal position.

Tried to remove all the excess garbage around the bycicle. Don't know if it's an improvement though...

Any comments?

Maybe an other little touch to the scenery...

Hey Lex, this is incredibly cool. Greenpeace will shoot you on sight, though ;-)

My first thought was crop to the bike also, removing everything else.

However after studying it (and seeing the tight crop) I am pretty sure I would like a tighter crop on the original but leave the robins egg blue cloth and the rim in the image. The bike by itself leaves the eye with no where to go.

The cloth adds a color relief.
