The Pleasure Pier at Southend-on-Sea in the UK is the longest in the world at 1.34 miles, stretching out into the River Thames Estuary...

...and it has it's own railway... (technically an electric tramway..)

1. From the landside terminal looking "out to sea" !

2. About half-way along...

3. The "Sir John Betjeman" heading outbound...

4. ... and inbound...

That's awesome! What's at the end of the track? I googled it but couldn't find a good answer.

A LifeBoat Station...

The rail line stops short about 1/8 mile from the end...

See this POTN thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=564008)to see what the pier looks like from the sea end...

Here's the Wikipedia link... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southend_Pier)

Thanks, Lee. Now I've got another item on my list to see when I make it across the pond for a little vacation.

Hi Don;

If you're in to trains, and you're visiting the UK, you might want to check-out UK Heritage Railways... (http://www.heritagerailways.com/)

It's a very good window to most of the heritage groups around...

FWIW, the pier @ Naval Weapons Station Earle in Leonardo NJ, extends 2.2 miles into Sandy Hook Bay, just south of NYC ;)
