Finally my school is playing some sports. The gym was amazing, sky lights with nice fluorescent lighting as well. I was able to keep my ISO under 1600 and keep a reasonable shutter speed, next time I'll shoot a little faster because of the MB on the hands. I found it weird that the WB on my 1d and my Mark II looked better having them both set to separate WB:/ I dunno if anyone here has shot volleyball, but it is a fairly annoying to shoot. Trying to find where the ball is going, and framing the person hitting it is rough:P Shot with my 300 2.8 and 24-70 2.8, I shot with my team facing me most of the time, some times standing about 2 feet higher up on a mat, some times kneeling and sometimes on the side. I'm aware of the small amounts of motion blur and they are intentional. However I didn't achieve the results I wanted with that next time I'll freeze the action completely.

5 this shot I was on the sidelines, the ball came directly at me and I was able to catch it off the bounce with my left hand, right hand holding the 300:P

8 Luckiest shot of the day, I was just putting my camera down when this happened and I was able to whip it up in time to get this crooked shot.

Why did you cut their legs off? Part of a good action shot is to see the whole athlete. Picture wise, they came out well as you said, though not sure what #7 is. I like #5 the best myself. I agree volleyball can be tricky, but as you get to know the sport more, you can predict where the action is going to take place. I've had good success just using my 85 mm f/1.8. Thanks for posting them.

These where shot with a 300 2.8 L, so I had no other option but to get just their upper body. Next time I'll have the 70-200 2.8 out there so I can get some looser stuff, shooting volleyball with a prime is annoying.
And as far as number 7, it's a shot of a players reflection on the wood, flipped:)
Here's another one taken from up high in the bleachers

They came out pretty nice. That gym has good lighting.

If you're shooting them at the net, cutting off legs are ok as the focus attention is probably on the blocking/hands or spiking. But if shooting them behind the 10-footline, it's nice to see the whole body especially when digging or diving for balls.

Volleyball is tricky and I like beach vball better, you have better light :D

a 85 f1.8 or 100 f2 would work wonderful here

#7 is awesome! It took me a few seconds to figure it out, but now that I see it I'm amazed!

nice shots. I like 8 even though it's scary to see a ball come up to the camera like that...but you were using the 300 :-P

oh yeah I forgot the story with #5, she spiked the ball, it bounced twice and was going straight at me, I caught it with my left hand where I was standing, still holding the camera with the 300 in my right hand. I'm just buff like that:P
and #8 was actually shot with my 24-70, and I did get hit:)
