Apologies for the heavy watermarking, I've had a lot of photos turn up in.. undesired... places of late and I'm a bit over it and this seems to be working alright as a deterrent so far.

The vox for Disturbed wasn't very expressive which was a bit frustrating visually but the guitarists were just such pleasure to shoot... very in-sync and one of the most dynamic performances I've seen. Massive crowd response, too - the foot-stomping for the encore was thunderous.

P.O.D, Alterbridge and Behind Crimson Eyes were support.

Most of these were shot with 1d3 @ ISO 3200 and either the 24-70L or 135L.

#1,2 and 5 for me!! good work. Question, I see a bit of noise in each one...which is expected at this type of setting. I have shot family shots in very dark settings @ high iso's and got similar noise results...and they said they were not very good pics...Do you find this type of noise seen here ok? Because if it is ok for someone that can shoot as well as you, it must be ok for those that do not know any better!;)

Nice Jim ;) 1downfall don't get caught up in the hype of having to have every shot noiseless. Noise adds character to a shot imho ;)

24- 105L is a fantastic lens, just not for this sort of work.

Re: ISO noise, i think for these kind of shots the gritty feel works really well and the noise does not detract at all from the pictures.

If someone is expecting a very clear and high-key photo of a baby for example, they might be a bit disappointed by a high amount of noise. Fast glass and LIGHT are the cure :)

A couple of years ago I was all about no noise in shots.... and then I found myself using Noise Ninja less and less. Some shots where I have to push ISO 3200/6400 a bit much I still use NN but on the whole I've come to appreciate grain as part of the image. The Mark III's noise is much more grain-like than the 20D's noise which tends to be more in lines through the image, which helps - not that the 20D's noise is bad by any means.

Take the sepia/black and white one of the Disturbed vox above - full-size the grain there really adds to the feel of the image. Out of curiosity went back and ran NN on it and it doesn't look half as powerful and gritty once you go through and clean it all up.

And anyway - try printing yourself a nice 8x12 of an otherwise noisy shot and see how you like it then.... it's very easy to get carried away viewing shots at 100% and judging the noise like that but for real-world applications it's not an issue.

To reduce the noise make sure you get the exposure bang on - if you're pushing an underexposed really high ISO image it'll look horrible no matter which camera you're shooting with.

cheers :) 24-105L is a nice lens but just wouldn't work anywhere near as well as the 24-70L for this kind of thing! Horses for courses..

cheers :) It's a shame you can't see the grain properly in the 800px size.. it really adds something to it.

I shot my first concert last night. I posted the results with my cheap XSi having not exposed myself to the real world of professional concert photography. Then I found your post.

auuhhhh ahhh zawwowowowewwoweee wowee wowee wow. Ok, that was unprofessional. But geez, man. Your exposures are hot. Yeah, props to the lighting crew. But still. Wow. I've gotta save up a third of a year's salary to pop down on one of those 1Ds. Sizzlin.

Jim's 3-odd years of shooting this stuff might have something to do with it too...

thanks for the kind compliments ;) Just keep at it - it's more practice than the 1D but the 1D helps! :D

I would certainly hope so! Or else I'm probably in the wrong line of work :p

What is method of use with the spot metering?

I spot meter using the active AF point, usually on skin tones of the performer's face (which is usually what I'm focusing on) with a little +exposure compensation depending on how light or dark their skin tones are. +2/3 often works depending on the light.

If I'm using the 20D I'll be using partial metering (as it lacks spot), meter lock off their face/skin/other and hold that (half-press the shutter button) until the lighting changes and focus using the back button throughout that process.

very nice set. 2 and 4 take the cake for me.

Great shots # 3,4,5,7, really rock

thanks guys :)

yeah, they're a pretty damned good live act - the guitarists were some of the most dynamic I've ever seen and they put on a really good show. I remember seeing them a couple of years back supporting KoRn and they actually put on a better show than KoRn did.

Nice set Jim. #2 is a killer!

All the comments about nice glass and nice camera are well and good but you do know how to use them to get results. It's no good having a Ferrari if you don't know how to drive!

--Hey Buddy, that is incredible! #7 is definitely my favorite, the lighting, your angle to blend in the ripples of the tapestry, right on. Very inspirational, actually. That gives me lots of ideas for lighting and use of background. I really like #6 as well.

Cheers man. I like the way all the lines in that image flow together.. I don't usually like abstract stuff all that much but this one seemed to work.
