A new press release from Canon USA:
http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20050201_americaschoice.html
It basically says Canon was number 1 in sales in the USA for 2004. An excerpt:
The NPD Group reports that the Canon brand captured the number one position in Total Digital Camera Sales in 2004, with a market share of 20.4 percent, based on unit sales of both compact cameras and digital SLR cameras combined*. In addition, Canon was the number one brand in both NPD's Digital Point-and-Shoot and Digital SLR categories, with market shares of 18.6 percent and 62.8 percent, respectively.

Even better check out Dpreview's top ten cameras clicked on, Canon usually has at least 7 out of the top ten*. I am impressed by the DSLR numbers though. Way to go Drebel. You know that one upped the numbers over everyone else. Then again my 1DsMKII counts as 8-12 of the drebel since it was probably dollar sales.
* = [darn N**** has two out of ten, normally they only have one]

If I read it correctly, it's unit shippment, which makes more impressive. 2/3rd of the dslr market is amazing  that means 1/3rd only for ALL other brands! WAW

Hey, don't be SO happy - if Canon realizes that they have no competition then they can do anything. A healthy price & feature war is good for the consumer since new stuff gets adds cheaply. If Canon gets 10 of 10 then they'll have no reason to add features to get new business. They'll have no reason to drop prices to beat Nikon.
So... Come on NIKON!

Yeah, I'm with Scottes. I'm really worried about Nikon and others, we need them to make Canon honest.

Good for Canon, and ofcourse I also have lots of Canon stuff, but they do need some competition!
We don't want Canon to become so dominant that they can ask whatever price they want for their equipment.

Hahahaha
This mornings news paper in Richmond Va. put Kodak at 1st with 4.88 million P&S sales, Sony art 2nd with 4.33 million P&S sales and Canon in 3rd place. HP took 4th followed by Fugifilm.

OK which report is correct? I only believe a little of what I hear, and some of what I see and I have doubts of it all :)

Jerry your article states "point and shoot" while Canon's article says "P&S and DSLR combined." Since both Sony and Kodak's DSLR sales have been abysmal then both articles are probably true.

'Spin' happens with statistics all the time. Canon can be correct, and so might Kodak and Sony. Its when you drill into it that you find out what they're really saying.
Suffice it to say Canon is not fighting to be number 7 in the market - they are near the top.

Here's today's volley:
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/technology/2005-02-02-kodak-usat_x.htm
This one has kodak at the top, with Canon disputing it. The study that Canon used counts sales, the other one counts cameras shipped. The Canon study does not include all retailers, and Wal-Mart is the most notable exclusion.
One quote from the Imaging Resource Web site:
Dave Etchells, who runs The Imaging Resource camera-enthusiast Web site, credits Kodak for doing a better job than most manufacturers on usability. "They've gotten really good at making functional, low-cost cameras." But on his site, the most-craved and discussed cameras, he says, are Canon models, ranging from the $225 A85 to the $1,500 EOS 20D. "They're the hot camera manufacturer right now."
My take on this is the average consumer that just wants snapshots tends towards Kodak, and the folks who care enough about getting good images to do a little research tend towards Canon.

Again I think its funny how the stories are released. Everyone wants to claim they are on top. (Except Nikon, haven't heard from them :) ) I was quite surprised at how many units Kodak claims they sold. Personally I don't think any one can touch Canon for quality for the $ but a lot of folks wanted kodak. Its obvious that no one can touch Canon digital SLR's but there are a lot of really nice cameras, all brands, out there that were not there a few years ago. If I remember right it has only been since early 90's that digital came about. I seem to remember it was a 1.2 mpx Kodak professional for around $17,000. Wow look at them now! I like to see other manufacturers doing well. We need competition to keep the prices down :)
