View Full Version : Indoor sports lens question AND forum question

Ok forum question first... what are the rules around inline images again? I looked in the 'forum' forum, and didn't see what I was looking for. It seems like it's 100k max or something. Kind of a pain in the butt in my opinion. I liked the way it was before, attach what you want. Are there THAT many of us techno nerds on modems anyways?

Second question, anyone shoot rodeos? I'm covering the Ft. Worth Liveshow & Exposition / Rodeo this weekend, and it's completely indoors. I went in today to meter and see what I'd be up against, and it looks like I'll be in ISO800 or greater even at f2.8, so I'll have to deal with that. I'm thinking my best bet might be to get in close with a 28-75 2.8 and my 550EX (which IS allowed on everything but the barrel races as it throws off the timing device.) If I go with a 300mm 2.8 it would probably do ok, but I think for the high action shots I'm going to need a flash, and I don't have a flash that'll go 300mm :)

I wish I had the 200mm 1.8, then I wouldn't need any external lighting. My main issue is catching the poor saps flying from the bulls / broncs, etc. Even at 1/60 at 22mm they were quite blurry. I'll need 1/125-1/250 before I'll get the sharpness I'm looking for.

I don't want to shoot ISO1600 if I don't have to!

Any thoughts are appreciated.

My opinion is that you should shoot at 1600 and go from there. You have plenty of noise reduction options such as Neat Image, Noise Ninja, etc. that all do a fine job. As you know, the 20D 1600 images by themself are definitely usable.

I read that thread recently, but I can't find it right now. I think a max width of 800 pixels and a max size around what you said is what it said.

It's better to get the picture at ISO 3200 than to miss the picture altogether.

Yeah I'm with you on the high-ISO vs. no image, I just want the best of both worlds :) I might go rent the 135 f2.0 which should be a good focal length with a nice aperture and allow me to use a flash. The other option is the 85mm 1.8 which should focus plenty fast for the action and give me good light gathering ability.

Cripes... anyone in Dallas / Ft. Worth wanna trade an 85 1.8 or 70-22 2.8 for a 100-400 for the weekend :)

Maybe I'll just use the 50mm 1.8 at ISO800 and crop as needed. I'm so used to shooting 400mm shots of fast moving cars in bright light, that this is a departure (read an opportunity to learn!)

Yeah. Rodeo's are tough. I had a go at one last year..but didn't have the right tools for the job (but it was digital, so had an attempt anyway..despite knowing it was pointless..which it was) :-) !

Just a thought...what about getting into the clown suit, with a 50mm 1.4...get some really, really good shots that way....on second though perhaps not :-) :-)

Yeah the 50mm 1.4 might be the way to go. I just dropped $700 on the 10-22, so the 50mm 1.8 will have to do. Or I can rent one for $10 or so for the weekend. That might be an idea....

Oh if you are going to rent it then definitely don't get into that clown suit with it :-) :-).
Could be rather awkward trying to explain to the rental shop that a bull is using it to polish the tip of one it's horns :-) !!

OOooh looks like I might be saved. Put a reservation in to rent a 200mm 1.8 for the weekend @ $35 a day. It's out of my own pocket, but it'll be a better value than a hooker, and just about as much fun!

I'll try and tackle this,..

First,. it's true,. some of this info is spread around,. so it's not easy to grasp. We'll have to find a way to get it all in one spot so it can be confusing all in one huge serving

First I think you are confusing the actual server bandwidth limitiation Vs. posting guidelines.

the "100KB" limit is not a guidline,. it is simply the largest image sizr that you can "attach" directly to the forum server.

the previous forum software would not allow direct attachment of images AT ALL.. they had to be hosted on there own server and either linked,. or "embedded" (also called hotlinked) using {img} tags...

For posting guidelines in the share forums,. see this thread;
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51052

Where we get further confusion is that there is also this thread here in EOS,...

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36417

This thread was a direct result of an ongoing issue of people posting "hotlinked" images in forums OTHER than "share" and "Critique"

the Consensus was and remains that indescriminate posting of embedded images in discussion threads was a disservice to the forum in general.

Thus the above additional guideleins that apply to ALL forum sections EXCEPT those specifically set aside for sharing of images.

Hope this helps.

Makes sense. It would be nice if there was a user CP option 'show images inline' kinda thing. Then those of us who LIKE it can have it, and those who don't can use the checkmark :)

Keep up the good work!

Renting a 200 1.8 sounds the way to go. What a beast of a lens !!.

There is. "Edit Options", then "Visible Post Elements" check or clear for signatures, avatars, or images as you wish. Even with "Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)" clear, you can choose to click on the URL and it'll load in a new window.
