I did a search and found lots of topics about insurance, but all related to liability insurance. My question is how many of you have a separate policy specifically for your camera and accessories?

I ask because after recently buying my 300D and some extras I contacted my insurance agent to make sure our homeowner's policy would cover it. He told me that it would be covered in the event of fire or theft subject to the deductible on the policy. He went on to mention (and this perked my attention right away) that for $30 a year I could have a Personal Items policy that would cover it with no deductible for just about anything (accidental damage, lost, etc). Seemed to me for $30 a year it was well worth insuring the $1,000+ worth of equipment for a few years. Has anyone else purchased a similar policy? And if so, what type of photography do you do (professional/amateur/free-lance/hobby, sports, artistic, weddings, portraits)?

You'd have to be pretty silly not to. I have mine specified on my contents insurance, which covers "sudden loss". I specifically asked about if I drop it, they said that sounds like a sudden loss to them, so yes.

I'm getting a little nervous, so I think i'll ring up and get it in writing.

I have mine insured through a rider on my homeowners policy so it is specifically listed and covered in more situations. It is relatively cheap for the coverage provided - $74/year for $4500 coverage.

Has anyone else purchased a similar policy? And if so, what type of photography do you do (professional/amateur/free-lance/hobby, sports, artistic, weddings, portraits)?

Photography is only a hobby (one I wish I had more time for), but the equipment still costs as much!

I just called my insurance company, and they were adiment there's no problem covering the cameras for all risks under my contents policy. I should have written down the persons name, but they're sending me a copy of my policy which i'll read carefully, and a letter confirming who I talked to.

Hi, I've always understood that my camera is insured under my homeowners insurance but only to a certain limit. That limit (on mine) is only $500.00. Anymore than that has to be covered with a separate rider. I think it just makes sense to insure! Better safe than sorry. Jim

I took out a prfessional photographers insurance policy thrugh North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA) after I got the MkII and some big glass...

It not only covers all the gear no matter where in the world or how I manage to damge/lose it,. but liability,. and other trouble that I could get myself into are covered as well.

Automatically covered under contents cover up to around $1500/2500 here, depending on where you go. Anything over, you have to declare it, and could put the premium up a little. Only made one claim before for a camera, and that was after I dropped the Olympus IS-200 film camera. That was a couple of years ago. And I broke my Sony V1 3 weeks ago. So that's why I've gone out to get a new camera now. (The Sony is actually being fixed, as it wasn't severly damaged like the Olympus, and would be good to have a backup little camera if the Canon DSLR ever fails.)

Anyway, you would be a fool not to insure the items. It won't cost that much. A few dollars a week, or thousands lost in one hit from something?!

I added a rider to cover the extra value of the camera equipment as well as to have the I dropped it in the lake coverage that the rider give:)
