I know these questions are asked a thousand times a day but i can't quite find a thread similar enough to answer my question.

I've decided that some of my pictures are worth having a shot at selling. One in particular i quite like:

I've had this printed (80cmX30cm - $18 ) and framed (works out around 1mX0.4m - $100). Now i'm going to try selling this locally in an art store or cafe - whoever will take it. My problem is i just can't decide how much it's worth...

I suppose you could also add in the labour costs associated with travelling to take the pictures, processing, getting it printed, framed and obviously associated equipment costs. For me to break even i suppose i'd be looking at somewhere around $200.

Any indications of a reasonable price?

Many thanks,
Nick

Break even + margin.

I'd be looking at least $200.

Yeah $200 would barely cover costs if i honestly included labour.

What's a fair margin?

Whatever your costs are, double that and add 25%.

Start there.

What's a fair margin?

25% (200 / .75) = $266.66 say $270.00. Thats if you have calculated all your time, effort and costs to equal $200.

One way to look at it is to price the photo to cover your costs and generate whatever margin you think is fair. Personally, I would do some research and see what prints are going for in your area. If the going rate for your type of print is $500, then price accordingly. If it is $100, then don't even bother with the whole excercise.

Thanks for the info all. I was thinking of putting about $300-350 on it and seeing how it goes. I'll definitely do some more research locally beforehand though. If it doesn't sell at that price there's no great loss. It looks superb hanging on my wall and i'd by very happy to keep it :).

I use the simple formula of Print + Frame + Matte x 3.5 (with some rounding of the final price). For me a 12x18 print cost $14.99 from my local lab. So if the frame is $37.52 + $10 for a matte then that is $62.51 x 3.5 = $218.79. So I round it up to an even $220.
