While taking some candids of the shoppers, this young lady sat about 10 ft away for a smoke break. Shot this with the camera on my lap - viewing the tilt screen to compose the shot as if I was reviewing images...

Should had got her on the exhale!!! Did you get one?? If you did.. Leave it color, bump the contrast up a little higher and darken the picture a little bit. Then the smoke will look very very nice. Nice shot.. And yeah.. the title is very misleading.. kekeeee,,

Nah... I chickened out after the first shot! I need to get back into the daring candid mode again (i used to snap some great shots 20 yrs ago in college with a Pentax MX and a big zoom)
Funny, I didn't even realize the pun in the title, until after the post!

The hand is one of the focal points of the photo and its out of focus, and the photo really needs straightening. It looks like a shot snapped from your lap.

Hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder... May not be able to post for a few days as I will be having surgery to graft one of my eyes to my stomach so that I can focus, straighten and generally better compose those lap shots in the future! Whew - tough crowd!

Yeah funnily enough I can read. My point was that it looks as amateurish as it was. It was taken from someones lap and you can tell just by looking.
It could have been a good photo and good still be somewhat helped by a little photoshop maintenance,

No offense taken Mattym. Please forgive me Mr. Smith. I will strive harder to improve upon my amateurish work, so that one day I may aspire to your level of greatness... But seriously Mr. Smith; I can appreciate the critique but how about helping out a fellow citizen and providing some constructive criticism on how to improve the shot?

Quality is something candid photogs have to give up for the spur of the moment shots. I would just be happy I got the shots off somewhat presentable. Its all just for the fun of it... Not to make serious money or anything so who the heck cares about the quality. I say post some of the stuff you were talking about from 20 years ago dude. It would be a flash back in time!!

When you said "smokin super market girl" I was thinking I was going to see an attractive lady. Boy was I let down. :)

personnal question, what's the point posting a picture if you have to give up "quality"?

Where did you get the idea that I was any good? I only ever posted two photos here. :) And just because this photo didn't work for me does not mean you are amateurish. My comments were not targeted at you, just this photo. As we tend to do a lot of critique in this area that all I was offering. My opinion on just this photo.
So here are my thoughts.
It sucks that the hand is out fo focus. I think it takes a fair bit away from the photo as it seems to be a focal point. Not really alot you can do about it.
The photo is at an angle, personally I prefer to straighten things out unless there is a particular reason not to.
And lastly. Keep shooting, the best way to get better is to take lots of pictures, post them here and have them picked apart by amateurs like me.

Thanks CS - Slowly, but surely I am regaining my "candid nerve" of years back. I will keep practicing!:D
