In the automatic setting, sometimes my flash pops up even though it's really bright and I don't need the flash. Is there anyway to turn that feature off in automatic mode? I hardly ever shoot in light that requires the flash so it would be better if it wasn't always popping up when I don't need it. Thanks.

I don't know, I never used the auto modes. Go into P mode and I think you have to pop up the flash yourself, if not there then Av mode.

I don't think i've used the popup flash on any of my cameras so I don't really know.

You can just hold the shutter button half way after you've achieved focus and push the flash down. If you want it off for all of your pictures, refer to page 52 or 53 of your owner's manual to totally disable the flash. If you're shooting in auto mode, though, I would recommend trusting your system and letting the flash fire for some fill on your subject. If you prefer the look of more natural light (like I do), you really need to learn how to shoot out of auto mode...

I know. I'm trying hard to learn but sometimes I catch my son doing something and I want the best possible picture so I'll throw it in auto mode for a shot or two. It's just annoying when the flash pops up and I don't need it. THANKS for the replies guys!!

If it's popping up in auto, you probably need it... otherwise your camera may adjust your shutter speed too slow (depending on your conditions of course) to catch an action shot... it won't pop up if your camera meter doesn't think it's needed...

P mode is full auto without the bother of the flash. You have to manually pop it up. You can also shoot raw and adjust ISO.

That is a statement of contradictions.

Auto mode makes all of the decisions for you, including whether or not to use the flash. Auto mode assumes you know absolutely nothing about adjusting the settings on the camera and attempts to dummy-proof it (very poorly though). The problem is that the camera really isn't all that smart and doesn't really know what it is "looking" at.

Many here recommend the book Understanding Exposure. (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220846949&sr=8-1) It will have you out of that green box in no time.

suggest P mode if you want quick auto... you dont have to think while using it and flash only activates if asked

in general for portraits i recommend AV mode personally, once aperture is chosen camera meters & exposes for you, gives you more creative control over the shot

Spend a week getting yourself out of auto mode. If your son does something cute during that week and you miss it....He'll do something even cuter the following week, and you'll have a BETTER picture of it!

I found a new friend, and his name is P-MODE!! :D I've been shooting in tv mode pretty much all of the time. After playing around with the settings, P-mode is the setting I think I will stay with! Thanks for the input everyone. Soooooo much to learn. This camera is my single most favorite possession!
