Has anyone made a direct comparison between the Eos 1D and the Eos 1D Mark II?
I'm tempted by the extra resolution of the Mark II but have otherwise been very happy with my Mark 1. Can anyone tell me how big my prints would need to be to justify a mark II?
Any help most gratefully received.

Best wishes to all & thanks

Welcome to the forum :)

I'm not going to venture to pigeon hole a print size limitation on the 1D,...

What I will tell you is that having owned both,. other than the increased resolution there is very little else that seperates these two as far as use and performance.

Yes most specs on the MkII are incrementally better than the 1D,. but the actual difference in your hands ,. as oposed to on paper,. is truly so microscopic that it is practically un noticeable (af speed, tracking etc..)

The 1D has truly remained a robust top shelf performer. It is NOT out classed by the 1D,. it has merely been improved upon.

Flash autoexposure is better,. but that was never a concern for my purposes.

In short,. for me, the only reason for upgrading to a MkII is for more resolution. I shoot wildlife at long distances and every drop of resolution and detail is a plus.

As for whether you need that increased res,. only you can decide that. You say you are currently shooting a 1D,.. so it should be relatively clear to you if you need to make the upgrade. If you are not satisfied with your large prints,. then maybe the MkII would the next step,.. but if you have not run into any barriers yet,. then why worry? ;)

Hope this helps.

I've also owned both, and CDS's analysis is spot on. The functional differences are evolutionary, not revolutionary

Figure that you can get prints about 40% wider and higher at the same print resolution. That may or may not be sufficient cause for you to change. For me, it was.

I currently own and use both and get double page spreads in magazines with them. You would be really hard pushed to pick one from the other. At A3 you can start to see the difference in some of the details, and the MK-II is cleaner for noise in shadow areas. My MK-I will stay in use until the next major evolutionary step, or I have a pressing need for the higher resolution of a 1Ds MK-II.
