Have already been asked for numerous copies of this photo www.marcderidder.com (http://www.marcderidder.com/). It looks wonderful at 8x12, but do you think that cropping it, particularly loosing the distracting lit pier on the right hand side, and/or replacing the burnt out moon with a better one showing detail from another shot, would improve it?

Yes crop out the light on the right but I like the moon the way it is. Nice shot ,looks great.

I like it as it is. Nice shot!
Forgot to add, the pier adds depth IMO.

I think the moon is fine. Rather than cropping, what about just toning down the light of the pier in PS?

My knowledge of PS is pretty limited. Should I use the burn tool to emulate what I would have done in the darkroom to darken the lights on the pier?

Before cropping or doing anything else, I would use PS shadow/highlight tool to bring out detail in the darker areas to a greater or lesser extent depending upon how it looked to me. Then I would crop to bring the moon and its light path across the water to somewhere between left of center and center, again depending upon how it looked to me.
I suggest this because, personally, I would feel more drawn in and involved in the image if the moon/clouds were closer and that I was actually standing on the moon's light path.
At any rate, nice pic!

Every photo looks good after a few bottles of red wine ;).
Asking because camera club judges are always going on about cropping in on the subject, distracting parts taking your eye away from the main focus of the picture and burnt out areas .
Guess when I sell the first one through the local craft shop or Seaview cafe, rather than giving it away free, I won't be listening to judges any more :).

I think the moon is just fine as is. Even though the photo is dark, I think it works as is. Beautiful mood is created.

I love it just the way it is plus I think it is more impressive this way!

Cropped the photo slightly on the right to remove the lit part of the pier. It turned out to be the price winning photo in my camera clubs annual night scene competition last night :D.
Thanks for all the comments.

If you're looking at selling it, maybe just a small crop, still in 3:2 ratio would be good, but if you're only sharing it online, it's fine as it is.
It's a great photo.
Good to know what my camera+lens combo can do. :D
Now I'll wait for the full moon.

That's the view from our living room window, looking out over the lawn, through the Scots Pine over the Firth of Clyde onto the Cowal peninsula.
This is a typical sunset: www.marcderidder.com/IMG_0644s.jpg (http://www.marcderidder.com/IMG_0644s.jpg).

Keep your eyes peeled on my website, currently under cnstruction. Hope to sell some photo's through this soon.
As I've not sold any to date, can anyone give me some guidance on what to charge for a 21x29.5cm enlargement mounted behind a 29.5x42cm board with 45 degree internal edges?
