Little beach birdy

I chased this guy around at Carolina Beach in NC last month. Any thoughts you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

Both are well-focused, but it's superior on the second one. Yet I would play around with the exposure (in Camera Raw, for instance) and see what less exposure could bring ...

The first is fine as a bird shot, scientific achieve of what the bird looks like. But apart from that its not saying anything. Looks over sharpened around the bird.

The second is an all around good picture that just happens to have a bird in it. I think this one is 10 times better than the first one.

I appreciate the comments. I didn't see it before, but you're all correct about the first photo. I thought that was the better one because I was distracted by the DOF on the ground... I thought I got pretty lucky with that... but now that I look at the pictures more as a whole, the second one does look better
