Here's a pic I took of this lighthouse in Manteo NC in late Sept of 2004.

Very nice scene - never seen a stubby little lighthouse like that before.

This is a "typical" river lighthouse in the US. The other ones that you probably are most familiar with are the tall brick lighthouses. The river lighthouses don't need to be built as sturdily as the ones along the coast. The screw-pile lighthouses along the Cheseapeake are also small and wooden like these.

Thanks, that's interesting. Are they manned or automatic? I think the UK now has no manned lighthouses.

As far as I know there are no manned lighthouses here in the US anymore either. And I believe the last manned US lighthouse is also the first American lighthouse, built in 1716, on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor

Those make for nice subjects, beings they are unusual. You should take more pics of them. This particular one looks a little blurry, though. Great shot otherwise. Makes me want to see more. Was it taken on a tripod?.

This is the Owl's Head Light in Owl's Head Maine. It is still manned by the U.S. Coastguard.

The shot is clear. If you could see the original rather then this scaled down verison. I took it using a tripod for 30 seconds. I have lots of lighthouse photos since this is my absolute favorite thing to photograph. Here's a daytime shot

As much as I would like to brag and say this is the only one still manned, I beilieve there are a few others. I believe there's a couple in the SE US and a couple on the west coast, but I'm not certain.

Found this on http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/light/boston.htm
"FIRST LIGHT STATION IN U.S.; 2ND OLDEST TOWER; SITE OF FOG HORN EXPERIMENTS 1893-1895; ONLY U.S. LIGHTHOUSE STILL MANNED; LARGER DUPLEX DWELLING RAZED 1960"

Not sure when this was written, however, the photos I posted were taken in July 04. I should have taken one of the sign stating it's one of the few still manned. 20-20 Hindsight!

The photo at the top of this thread is not the Roanoke River Lighthouse, but the replica Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse recently built in Manteo.

There is a replica of the first screwpile Roanoke River Lighthouse recently built on land in Plymouth, and the last screwpile Roanoke River Lighthouse (first lit in 1903) was deactivated in 1941 and moved across Albemarle Sound to Edenton in 1955. It is the only surviving original of a dozen plus screwpile lighthouses that used to guide navigation in the North Carolina Sounds. Edenton Historical Commission is well advanced with a project to buy it from the son of the man who moved it, restore it, and move it to the Town's harbor at the foot of South Broad Street where it will be open to the public.
