I've just ordered a Canon 10-22 lens and I want to have a UV filter on it. I always use Hoya filters but I'm not sure whether to get the wider one with front threads or the ultra thin one? My instincts tell me the ultra thin one would be much better for this type of wide angle? Also if I do order the ultra thin am I correct in thinking that once fitted i wouldn't be able to use the supplied lens cap? If so does the filter come with a replacement protective cap?
Thanks.

I use the Hoya Pro-1 UV filters. They are ultra thin and also have a front thread, so you can use the Canon cap as normal. I know the B+W wide angle ones don't have the thread and come with a push on cap supplied.

According to a sales agent you need the thin because of vignetteing with the wider one at 10mm.

If the 10-22 is not EF-S then you probably don't need the thin ones. But if you're going to stack filters, like a polarizer, then it might not be a bad idea. Even if a thin one isn't necessary it won't hurt anything except your wallet.
I do recommend getting one with a front thread - I got a thin polarizer for my 17-40 (which wasn't necessary) but it doesn't have front threads so it is a pain in the butt. It would be nice to be able to put a lens cap on when the polarizer is on. And a front thread also makes stacking filters quite a bit easier.

I always take the UV off when adding a polariser. The more filters you stack, the more it can affect light, particularly with light bouncing between the stacked filters glass.

I do use a polariser but when I do I always take off the UV filter.
Anyway I'm still none the wiser? I'll no doubt go with the 'ultra thin' version.

Go for the Hoya Pro1 UV filter. It's got a front thread. It's ultra thin. It blocks less light. Only downside is their price.

I've used my 10-22 for a couple of months now with a regular Canon UV filter. It doesn't vignette at all. I have given some thought to getting a thinner Polarizing filter when the time comes but I'd like to see what a regular P filter would do first.
