She asked me what is the going rate for that and how to tap into a network of photo's. She is looking for High School Sports photos and Kid Sports in the Georgia area. I have no clue of where to start and what to tell her. I am in my area only (augusta area) Can you guys give me some insight. she is looking for 50 or so photos a month for her mag.
Please advsie on what she eneds to do and how that works. Its for all sports.

Freelancers would shoot an event for her mag for a flat fee, say 150 dollars. If she wants someone to routinelly shoot 50 photos a month for her magazine, that's not really freelancing. That would require a staff photog and a different pay type.

that is what i was wondering what makes it freelance. she is looking for photographer that shoot at their local schools to basically just send in a few photo's for possible use. Something they may already be doing i guess.

fotoQuote is probably the industry standard for print pricing. It is a pretty sophisticated application that allows you to identify several variables (Print quantity, size of use, length of use, etc.) and provides a low-mid-high recommended price range.

As for finding potential photographers here are a couple suggestions.
Ask around at the specific schools she needs covered and see if there is already a "regular" shooter covering events.
Contact local newspapers and see if they will share any names of stringers/freelancers in the area.
Post an add on Craigslist or similar.
Hope that helps.

Not necessarily. I freelance for one particular paper which has me doing an assignment every week. Its the same type of assignment every single week where I submit 15-20 pictures of a particular event and then they pay me. Its freelance though because Im not on staff.
Just because youre "freelance" doesnt mean you cant have a very regular assignment with a paper. All it really means is that you are technically not an employee of that organization, they dont withhold any taxes from your paycheck, and your work is never really guaranteed.

When I shot freelance for a local weekly, it was a flat fee per assignment, this would go up to cover extra mileage or for day long events. The local daily paid per photo, usually giving the shooter something if nothing was printed.
Best thing would be to ask some of the shooters at the games. Most local magazines and newspapers don't pay much, $150 per event, sorry, this ain't SI or Life.
