View Full Version : Polaroid SprintScan 4000 - when to say NO!

I have recently acquired at the best possible price (free) a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 film and slide scanner. It is in its original box with software, cables, and slilde/film carriers and appears to power up OK. It actually looks unused.

My question(s) -

It requires a SCSI connection to my WinXP system. Is this worth pursuing since I do not have a SCSI card installed? The seem to be pricey for playing around.

I have seen SCSI to USB cables for sale - do they function OK, worth trying?

I have an HP PhotoSmart S20 Slide/film/print scanner that takes one slide at a time. It works and is used. Should I be content with that?

I know I'm asking for opinions but I know nothing about the Polaroid and its ability to perform and would appreciate some suggestions.

The SS4000 is an excellent scanner. You should be able to get a SCSI board for less than $50. Buy a board that matches the SCSI connector that is on the cable that comes with scanner. That saves you the cost you the added cost of a new cable. They are usually expensive.

Added Note: Wow!! I just checked NewEgg and the cheap SCSI card is almost nonexistant. The only $70 card they carry uses very old WinXP drivers. Maybe a local computer store or swap meet?

Thanks Gerry - that pricing is what I keep running into. I'll have to make sure I can ID a SCSI card and keep my eyes open at resale shops and swap meets.
