I am a newbie and just got my rebel yesterday. So, go easy on me. I know this shot is not technically great but I wanted to post it because I couldn't believe I was able to get this handheld. My point and shoot would never have done this. I love my Rebel!:)

Nice having a fast camera. I recently upgraded from a Sony DSC-70... man was it slow...
Nice kitty.

Are your cats eyes really that colour? or did you tweak it a bit?

Her eyes really are that color! She is half Siamese and half Hymalayen. Both of which are known for their blue eyes.

At least you will see her coming on a dark night!
Seriously though, the pic is pretty good. focussed on the eyes and well exposed
I can't make out what the bright object between her paws is, but it does draw your eye a bit as it is so bright.
The pose is good too, but there may be a bit too much of the background, have you tried cropping in a bit? Plain backgrounds are not distracting, but too much of them is just blank space.
You could even try blurring the background a bit, either take another shot with a wider aperture or use a blur filter on the computer.

Thanks Mark. That is the kind of thing I want to hear. I will know a little better what to look for the next time.

Now's when the fun starts.
Enjoy the camera, it'll do you well for a good while. Take lots of shots and develop your style.
