I took this pic of the ring-billed seagull last March in the OuterBanks of NC. I saw several gulls carrying these things in their mouths. Does anyone know what on earth it is??

Some type of mollusk. Chances are good that he flew up, and dropped it to fall on some hard surface, and dived down to eat the inside.

Nice shot though, but there looks like a dust bunny up and to the right of his eye.

Maybe that is what he was carrying around. I think I do remember now some seagulls dropping them then picking them up again. It does look like dirt on the CCD panel but that this time is actually and out of focus pebble/shell in the background.
