I just missed out on a sweet deal on a 100-400L. $1149 in like new condition from B&H. About 10 minutes ago I checked their used dept like I do every few days, and saw it. I IM'd a buddy of mine who owns one to see what he thought. By the time I went to see what condition 10 meant, and then went to add it to my cart 3 minutes later, it was gone.

Here's how our IMs went, just to show the timeline (I edited out the profanities) :D

pcasciola (03:56:28 PM): B&H has a used 100-400L in 10 condition for $1149. should I get it?
flyfishnj (03:56:33 PM): yes
flyfishnj (03:58:20 PM): DO IT
pcasciola (03:58:59 PM): "10 Preowned equipment, but appears as new"
flyfishnj (03:59:11 PM): JUST DO IT
pcasciola (04:00:20 PM): DUDE, IT'S GONE!!!!!!!!

Many times when B&H gets these they come from Canon Service (refurbs?, returns?, who knows) and they come with everything except the original box and the warranty card.

Thing is, B&H has a condition of 'R' for refurb, but they don't use it for these. Sometimes they get them in quantities, which will show on the listing (how many?).

In any case, they go quickly. A few months ago they had a big pile of them, lots of different models, and they went like crazy. I started a thread about it (after I got what I wanted, naturally).

It pays to watch them regularly.

I too caved at that time and bought one.
Now i check the page regularly but still miss seeing some aparently!

That's weird.
I just wondered into the BH website yesterday at around 4pm and bought a used 100-400L for $1149.

Not bad, but you find those price on places like FM for mint condition ones, actually cheaper.

Persian-Rice - I was thinking the same thing. Althought you do not get the benifit of buying from a reputable retailer I have purchased a few lenses from others on www.fredmiranda.com and I have been completely satisfied.

Phil - Check out the Buy & Sell forum on Fred Miranda's site & check often quality gear tends to move quickly.

Another good source for used equipment is the Trading Post section of the Rob Galbraith forums.

I have made a couple of good buys there

The only thing I don't understand about the first post is how anyone would need to know the meaning of a 10 rating. Doh!!!

But wouldnt that just make you mad if some guy just went to BH and bought it without thinking what a great deal he got!?
