So you were like the guys on CSI that take tons of photos. I always catch myself checking out their cameras and flashes! lol. I guess in CSI Vegas they primarily shoot Canon, and CSI NY primarily shoots Nikon. I guess if someone watches CSI Miami we can see who get's 2 out of 3!
I believe I've seen Nikon systems on on CSI Miami...

For me, I am an Electronics Technician in the US Navy for the past 16 years. I am more in RADAR repair specifically, but can easily fix a piece of communications equipment. Actually now that I think about it, I'm in the supervisory role, I tell the young guys to fix the equipment and answer any questions they have... Speaking of photography, they have a job in the navy that deals with it. MC, Mass Communications Specialist. Too bad the Navy only buys Nikon equipment. The camera equipment I have for a hobby blows the equipment that the Navy uses out of the water, at least on my ship.

Semi-retired clock dealer and clock repairman. Had a career in education for 7 years and as a stock broker - 3 years retail and 3 years wholesale. Been flying by the seat of my pants ever since.

If you are serious about photography you must find a GOOD school which has an excellent program in the arts with a strong photographic curriculum. Take a lot of business courses while you are concentrating on photography. Intern with a good photographer.

By the time you are finished with school you will know if that is what you really want to do. It is a long tough road and will require a fair amount of money.

Do not get sucked into student loans. Pay as you go. It may take longer but, you will be financially better off in the long run.

Look familar? LOL

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg62/Stargazer_54/downtownAustin.jpgI've been a professional photographer for twenty years now. Started doing most of my work for textbook publishers. I've now done quite a variety of different work. When we had a creative book here my ad said "Anything but wars and weddings." I now do primarily architecture and corporate with some editorial work thrown in.

I didn't notice many working photographers had responded... Are they rare here?

I'm a "suit" on the business management (contracts+procurement) side of a multi campus college with approximately 40,000 students.

I guess a small part of my job is photography related since I'm responsible for the procurement of all of the equipment for the Media folks. The latest project was a full blown HDTV studio with all the lighting, editing, and related bells and whistles. I also get to assist the Art Dept faculty with their photography related needs. I tend to give more personal attention to those kinds of projects.

Retired from skydiving after almost 1,500 jumps, sold all my jumping gear, and used the proceeds to get back into photography as a hobby. The wife unit is very happy - she thinks photography is a nice "safe" hobby...or at least she did until I mentioned something about an interest in glamour photography...;);)

The 'Mythbusters' episode was excellent, but (IMHO) one of the truly OUTSTANDING compilations of debunking the old "did we really land on the moon" conspiracy theory is located here: http://www.clavius.org/

I am a NASA employee, so the conspiracy theorists will undoubtedly discount my opinions straightaway. But Jay Windley, the author of the Clavius website, is an independent citizen who has done extensive analysis on this subject, and posted astonishingly thorough demonstrations and explanations which clearly refute every single one of the "accusations" leveled at NASA in the original Fox-TV Moon Conspiracy program.

Of special note to POTN readers, is the way Jay Windley addresses the many photographic issues -- he goes into great detail describing the Apollo Hasselblad cameras, the unique lighting & shadowing conditions, image exposure, lens flare, color bleeding, surface albedo / reflectivity, the infamous image crosshairs, and the uneven terrain effects found on the surface of the moon. Please don't accept the *biased* opinion of this NASA employee -- but if you're truly interested in this subject, go check out clavius.org

OK, 'nuff said. This is a great thread about POTN member occupations, and it is not my intent to morph/hijack the theme into something else. Best regards to all! :D

IT for a large insurance and financial services company. Once I retire the debt from a previously failed side business, I plan on wedding photography - still expensive to get into, but I can more readily control all the aspects than a retail store (no lease, no employees, no concern about traffic count, bills during off-season, etc. etc.) I plan on using my IT background (including image editing and web site design and publication) skills in conjuction. Hopefully the photography will be something I increase into retirement.

"the gap from '77 to '84"

Thanks for that, but I was in the Corps from 70-74.

The gap was a result of my early time in the USPS, when I was working 60-plus hours a week, starting a family, and just trying to get some sleep.

I was seriously torn between staying with Uncle Sam back then, or going into a photo/editor career. During that time frame, I was offered a job in Fallon, NV as the Managing Editor of the daily Fallon Eagle-Standard. The pay was about a third of what I was making, unloading mail trucks at night. I stayed with the Postal Service and found other creative outlets over the past few decades.

I'm pretty much a jack of all trades. I have a "constant" job at an animal center. I work there 2-3 days a week, low pay, great place, wonderful job as an educator (kids, mostly). Then I have my money maker job as a background performer on television shows and movies.

I make more money on an average month doing photography then anything else right now. But if a show comes back to San Diego I'll be making more money doing background, but will also work a bit as a set photographer (hopefully) so that'll add to my photography income. So I guess I'm a little of everything and a lot of nothing. :)

I'm a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Currently stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.

Started liking photography about 5 years ago when a friend of mine showed me his work and what he did. I never got around too much into it though because of work and family. We have a daughter now so I've been wanting to buy a DSLR and give it a try just, if anything so I can take great pictures of her for later on in life. I finally bought my camera and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I go back home to my wife and daughter so I can put my measley skills to the test.

Rocket Scientist, seriously.

I'm a Design Engineer for a Rocket propulsion company and DoD contractor. We design and manufacture rockets for use on missiles and space vehicles. I spend most of my days working on designing rockets, and every few weeks get to go out for live testing of the motors. It's definitely a challenging job that makes you think a lot, but it's still quite fun to work on rockets for a living.

"Newspapers now use images that move?"

Absolutely. A good percentage of newspapers use video clips on their web pages, taken by reporters or photographers.

The Sixth Edition of Photojournalism, The Professionals Approach speaks specifically to this trend. In some cases, newspapers are using a still image from a video for the paper, and posting the full clip on their web site.

Oh ain't that the truth! And then there's always the possibility to switch to photography in case one should get tired of flying. If that's possible ;)

Right now I'm flying the Saab 105 (also known as sk-60) which is a light jet trainer.
