Has anyone used the "cheap" japanese BP-511 replacement bateries (around $12.00 on ebay). The original 'Canon' battery says 7.4V 1100mAh (Li-ion) but the japanese one's are 7.2V, 1500mAh. Is it wise to get these or should I go with the original Canon BP-511 ($100+)? It's for my Digital Rebel.

This has been discussed frequently here.
The higher rated batteries, like 1500 mAh, simply give you more "gallons in your gas tank" as compared to the old 1100 mAh ones.
The voltage rating, like 7.2 or 7.4 does not mean too much in this case, since we don't know the exact way they test it. If it had something outside that range, I would be suspicious.

Good quality third party batteries are good. Not sure about those on e-bay, have a look here:

Have heard some bad things about the really cheap ones though, but nothing bad from these two.
Paying full price for a Canon battery is a waste of money!

I found SterlingTek batteries to be first rate, and since I bought mine they've increased the capacity from 1300mah to 1500mah. They came with little clipon covers too, which I find very handy.

Just got some new SterlingTek batteries last week. I'll try to update everyone on how well they work.

I bought a couple of 'cheap' batteries for $16 CND all included from ebay. They work fine, and even if they don't last as long as the Canon, I can buy $120 worth of them until they do, because that's what they're trying to sell the "CANON" BP-511A for here in Toronto. Let's remember, Canon is not making batteries.... they're buying them too.
I've heard a ton about batteries 'exploding' but other than 1 type of battery, in 1 type of cell phone, I haven't heard anything else. Anyone actually had a battery damage their camera?
