Hey, I was just in a shop before and they were selling copies of Gary Fong lightspheres (made in China I assume).

They were $23 USD each, including 3 extra colour... lids(?!).

Would it be worth going and buying the set for fun/experimenting, or not?

Doesn't matter if it's an authentic Fong one or a knockoff, you'll still get the same comments about wasting light, batteries etc. Save yourself the $23 and put it towards a bracket, getting your flash off-camera, LQ Promax/Demb Flipit or something else more recommended here :)

Send me $23 and I'll let you have all the Tupperware you want... ;)

I sorta decided not to get it after I did a quick search.

Enjoy the thread anyway.

My Omnibounce copy I got for $10 USD will do me. :D

^Oh my...

My DIY diffuser is quite awesome for $15. Had to buy a while pack, the wife used the rest of the foam but it would have been like $6

I tried the "a better bounce card" and some white cards etc. etc. I actually prefer the omnibounce myself.

Yep, the Chinese copy will DO you. Happy ending I suppose... whatever that means. ;)

I'll try my fong bong copy with the flash pointing straight forward. It'll have aprox twice the area of a omni bounce when pointing straight at the subject.

My joe demb flipit is my main diffuser.

I hardly ever have to point the omnibounce at the subject anyway. Unless it's full sunlight and I'm filling.

The Fongware might work well, but I can't get over how darn ugly it looks.

I guess you guys have had different experiences with the Fong diffuser than I have had. I wouldn't be without mine. Test pics I've take, even with a bracket, show a much softer, more flattering light for outside portraits.

there's nothing really wrong with the fongware (I like that term!) it's just that fong has made himself really uncool.

Using fongware is socially awkward among photographers now -- sort of like getting a beefy stereo for your car, with 2 12" subwoofers in the trunk, then cranking britney spears at the traffic lights.

Yeah ladies... check out muh britney fong. Ohhhh yeahhh...

There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not cool -- and everyone knows being cool is mandatory, right?

What are you bouncing off? If nothing, then it's doubtful you are getting any benefit from the LS, unless you've discovered how to make photons change direction on the fly.

Are you suggesting that the LS (either clear or cloudy) does not have any diffraction properties?

No, but the photons being dispersed everywhere won't be hitting your subject unless they can bounce off something.

I understand they're not being bounced, but they'd still qualify as softer (and a little larger in area) than direct flash...

Not that I really think they're super-effective outdoors, but if you have one for indoor use, I figure it doesn't cost anything to try it outdoors too.

What I can't figure out is why someone would bash Fong and then put a Stofen on their flash. That's just a mini-fong IMO.

They both work at what they promise to do, scatter light. If you (meaning people in general) don't like scattered light, then don't bounce flash too. That's just an "alternative" fong.

I think it's because the Fong thing is sorta ugly (IMHO).

No one used a Lightsphere at Gary Fong's own wedding.

'Nuff said.

thats because their wedding was outdoor and it was still day time...

Absolutely. That tells you how useful it is straight-ahead. Oh and arguing against flash during the day is useless - there's this little thing called "fill" that's quite popular.

Some of the photographers used Sto-fens in tent during the evening though. They didn't use Lightspheres.

Heh heh, that's all true.

CDI converted me to flash (indoors and out). Now I never go out without a flash on (except when I'm doing covert street stuff).

Well, put a Canon sticker on it and you'll see

I've tried my friend's LS and I didn't like it at all, I really prefer the "better bounce card" (made a couple of them with some shiny vinyl, velcro and staples) and the Omnibounce.
