looking at the numbers it sounds like a great all around lens, but for what you want to do, and the price it costs, you'd be better off getting 2 lenses.

the reason i suggest that is while this one does cover a wide range, its not wide enough on a digital crop on the wide end, and at f/5.6 its not fast enough on the long end for drifiting... it also costs more then 2k

id recomend a 16-35L for car shows and for drifting the 70-200L IS lens.

i have a 90-300 and i keep hitting 300 and wanting more, and i also find the 90 is just to much at times,

i took these the other weekend with my current lens, but i need some thing thats a bit more shparer and a quicker focus

I'd suggest Sigma 50-500 + tripod / monopod if you are shooting bright light.

That's what I'm looking at getting for my motorsport lens.

i was thinking of going down that road but there App is just to big, and wouldnt meet my needs in lower light levels

The AF is a bit on the slow side with that lens for motorsport...

Am i missing something ?
4 replies to the post but no mention about actual lens.
which unless a new model has just been released does not exist.

28 to 350 L is was Shanes question.
Now canon make the new 28 to 300 L is and of course the older version being 35 to 350L is.

My thoughts about both of them is fine quality in build and performance.. expensive, yes but not if its the only lens you need it covers the range of several others in one unit.
If you are happy with relatively small apertures fine, but its not for me.
I tried the older 35 - 350 did not like it .

its actually the big apertures you really need !
this is sometimes confusing
Bigger the aperture = lower the number that relates to it... ( f 1.4...f2...f2.8 )
So ....f 2.8 is a big (wide / fast ) aperture.

smaller the aperture = higher the number that relates to it.... ( f5.6 ...f8...f11)

try shooting a 500 f8 mirror lens for action its just to slow, now a 500 f2. when they make it would be a dif matter.

just read cadwell. good point about focus speed which i had realised previously.(deep in the back of my brain somewhere)

However with all the different posts on here. has anyone ever compared say sigma V canon on the issue of focusing speed , does sigma use selective ranges like our L series.
I use a 14mm 2.8 sigma its wonderful when i need it. all others canon.

I only have one Sigma, the 120-300mm f/2.8EX. It's every bit as fast as my Canon 100-400L in terms of focus speed (might even be slightly faster). Both are fractionaly slower than my 70-200 f/4L. Depends on the lens, I think. No selective range on my Sigma - doesn't seem to miss it though.
