3 things...
1. when i opened the box, the receiver was flashing the on/test led green, does it do this all the time because it hasn't stopped yet?
2. i am using my 580exII and after the flash goes into standby, pressing the test button on the transmitter doesn't wake up the flash. i am going to try taking a picture with the transmitter on the camera instead of just pressing the test button
3. my flash seems to pop a little louder when i use the cyber syncs. hmmmm.

2. firing with the transmitter on the camera does not wake up the flash...

IIRC the on/test green led will stop flashing after an hour if you haven't pressed the button or the receiver has not received a transmission for the transmitter. It's designed to do that. If you do push the button or it receives a signal will will flash for another hour. There is no off switch on the receivers or the transmitter, btw.
As for the 580EX II going into standby, you'll need to change the standby period on the flash itself since, as you have already discovered, the receiver will not bring the flash out of standby mode.

yeah, that's what i figured.

Congrats, I think you'll like them. What mode is the 580EX II in? In ETTL mode I think the flash seldom fires a full or near full shot. A full manual shot with the flash does produce a noticeably different pop. At least my units do.

i noticed it in ETTL and manual mode.
however, in ETTL it is a little louder.
as long as this is normal, i am ok with it.
and for the record, the green led does stop flashing after a certain amount of time. i could be 1 hr, i am not sure since i wasn't monitoring it.

how reliable are the cybersyncs? I am going to order a set tomorrow as I need them for next weekend.

I've not had one misfire on me.

for the little time i have been using them, they seem to be working pretty good.
just make sure you know what power setting your flash is on, i had mine set to 1/1, full power, and i thought i had it on a lower setting, so i took some shots and my flash didnt fire, obviously it wasn't because of the cyber syncs.
my only problem is that the receiver doesn't have an off switch. it seems like there is a 1 hr stby on the receiver before the flashing LED stops flashing.

Very reliable. I have had mine for a few weeks now, and not a single misfire. And for the RX'er not turning off, I had the same issue except I was draining batteries in between uses, so now I store the RX'er with no batteries in it. When I need the Cyber Syncs, I pop the batteries in it and off I go.

yeah, that is one thing i noticed...i do the same when i throw them in my bag. right now i have my flash mounted to a stand, so i just leave the receiver connected and it just hangs.

I was actually considering gluing a small rubber washer over the switch to prevent it from being hit in the bag...

Another good idea. I will consider this once I get tired of pulling the batteries out.

i am already sick of taking the batteries out.
the idea posted above sounds like a good one. just curious, why wouldnt they just make an on off switch? seems like that would have solved a simple problem.

I'm not sure you should be able to tell the difference in ETTL since you can't use ETTL with a Cybersync. If it's going off, it is probably dumping the whole load as if it were in manual. I could be wrong. I don't use an ETTL flash when I go off camera with a radio remote.

yeah, you could be right...i know i cant use ETTL, but when i hooked i up and turned my flash on, it was in ETTL, so i pressed the test button and that is when i heard the pop.
seems normal though.

Same here - not one misfire.
I've been shooting at 160th because the owners manual said to set the shutter speed at one or two clicks below the max sync speed. (I have a 30D and 430EX's). Has anyone played around with shooting at max sync speed?

The lack of an on/off switch is kind of a pain. I bought a pelican case, filled it with custom cut foam, and keep my receivers/trigger in this when in my bag. It looks like this:
I've had my cybersyncs for a couple of months now and have used them probably 20+ times. No misfires, and I love them. I have a 40D and it says max sync speed of 250, but mine will actually sync at 320. Go figure
You've probably already figured out you can change the Custom Function 1, and by changing it from 0 to 1 you turn off the automatic standby mode on Canon flashes. Hope that helps.

What case is that? That works pretty nicely

Looks like a 1020, 1050, something in that range.
