I'm a big fan of Breezebrowser and Chris Breeze's Downloader Pro for downloading and organizing pictures. It also automatically generates HTML webpages which can be useful.

IrfanView is very efficient at batch processing as when I want to resize or rename a bunch of photos. It's a free program.

You might also look at Photoshop Elements 3, which includes an organizer (PS Album) as well as a light version of Photoshop. One advantage to PS is the wealth of tutorials, plugins, books, etc. that are available for it, most of which applies to Elements as well as the full (expensive) version, Photoshop CS.

Paintshop Pro is a good, full featured, and relatively inexpensive program that I use quite a bit....I even use it over Adobe photoshop for some functions. Check it out.

Elements 3 is the biggest and best. Just make sure you have enough memory. I love it and am still learning day by day.

Memory--good point. 256 is not enough, unless you have the patience of a saint. I'd say 1G is a good starting point.

each photo is different and needs individual attention to get it just right. batch processing is not going to get the best results you need as it is a general fix.

if you are serious in developing your skills as a photographer then you will invest the time for each photo.
