I'm looking for a point & shoot for my brother to take to Iraq. Camera must be rugged, light weight, have full auto & manual mode, and easy to use with gloves. IR would be a nice touch. Also. $150 or less.
Any ideas? Canon would be nice but any quality brand will do.
I know, it's a lot to ask for the price range.
EDIT TO ADD: Use of CR123A Lithium batteries would be great!

By no means do I claim to know what I'm talking about, but I dont think you can fill an order that tall for a price that low while retaining at least SOME level (or any level) of quality. If you are willing to bump your price quite a bit, I would say Canon SD870 IS. The new models are coming out so the prices on these are decent. I just got one for 286 with tax. Or if u can bump your price even a little bit I would say Canon SD1100 IS, but I'm not sure it has much of anything you want.
Again, I have no idea what I'm talking about but I ship out in January and got the SD870 for myself.

If you want manual controls then you need to go for the A series; however the cameras in that series use AA batteries. For the budget you have, A590IS would fit the bill nicely and would still leave you with enough cash to buy rechargeable batteries and charger.

IR capability will add another several hundred to that 150.00 (I think it is anywhere from 300 to 400 more to have them modifify your camera for IR depending on which modification you want).

Ok, figured $150 would be a bit low for what I am looking for. How about rugged, light weight & CR123a batteries for that price?
AA batteries will be fine but a lot of his gear uses CR123a.

My son is there right now. He has a Canon SD1100 IS and it works great. Small, out of the way, good quality and the video is pretty good too. Battery life is excellent. 2 - 4GB cards also. Get a case with it that will attach to a belt. About $215 - $225 for everything. Shop around a bit.

The only digital I can find that takes CR123a's is the Olymps E500 DSLR

I guess I gotta get the family together to chip in on a good P&S.
I this this fits the bill but for the batteries.

I was deployed to Iraq for 15 months in 2004 and i took a canon a80 ps it held up pretty well and I was even published in a times magazine war book. So I think one of the A series will hold up pretty well and he will want decent photos for memory sakes. get an a 580is AA batteries are fairly easy to come by. Internal battery cameras not an option over there 240V vs our 120V

Canon's chargers are dual voltage; they'll work as well on 240V as 110V. You may need a plug adapter, but that's about it.
