The last couple of weeks, our small camera group has been discussing different flash techniques. Several of the members use Nikon and Pentax, and can tirgger the strobes with just the onboard flash. Why doesn't Canon have this ability?

ummm, you can. Just make sure the lights are set to slave mode.

With the 40D? Another member thought we could also, but we couldn't figure it out, so he called Canon and they said it was not possible. Do you know if there is a specific CF we have to set?

That won't help because the ETTL pre-flash will fire the slaves prematurely and render them useless.
You need an STE-2 or an EX flash with master capability to accomplish this, used with an EX flash with slave capabilities.

Thats why you get lights like the Genesis strobes from Calumet that have a setting so they wont fire on pre flash :)

I'm pretty sure the OP is talking about speedlights and the Nikon CLS system and not studio strobes.

That is correct. We were working with different ambient light situations, and the Nikon/Pentax users were able to hand their speedlights to someone to get a different angle of flash. The other neat trick was to use the gorilla pods to attach the speedlights on a railing / tree / pole to get the lighting they wanted.

My fault, I should have written speedlights.

This is one thing I kinda wish Cannon would implement. But its not a deal breaker for me.
