Hello, I currently have the Canon Rebel 35mm. I am thinking of upgrading to the digital Rebel. But my hobby is really just taking Black and White photos. Can you do this with the digital rebel? Also can you use filters Etc. and do the pictures look as good as film. Thanks for any help.

Also someone told me to wait if I decide to buy a digital Rebel because a new one is coming out. Anyone know when or how much it is?

There are several ways of post-processing your digital photos to get a black and white, with varying effects. And filters will have much the same effect as they would in film.

There's supposed to be a new Digital Rebel model coming out at the PMA show (see thread in "General Chat"). It hasn't been officially announced, though. See there for the latest rumors.

The drebel only has 2 processing parameters. For really good results the majority of the time ( IMO ) is to shoot in color and then convert in PS.
Yes you can use filters on the lens of your dslr- just like a regular slr. The pictures will look as good as you make them look !
There is expected to be an upgrade model in regards to the drebel/300D- the trade show is coming up in 2 weeks. You will know by then for sure.
Good luck in your purchase search and considerations !

Yes, you can do all that you are wanting in the dRebel....and probably have much more control over the final image than you would using a wet darkroom.

I agree with Pradeep, infact I'm certain you have far more control for B&W in something like Photoshop. Also Photosop will make most filters redundant, I tend to use only UV- for protection, polariser, ND filters and ND grads. IR filters I'm not to sure about with digital due to an in camera filter.

I can understand your anxiety on a possible replacement for the 300D.
However I cant help you there, if you can wait then wait, if you can't then buy.
Either way you will enjoy digital.

If you have any good graphic software knowledge, you can develop your own conversion method that suits your style.

There are generic free actions out there, but they are exactly that, generic. Take the time to develop your own method and I promise you will be very happy you converted. Like yourslef, my stuff almost always goes black & white. When shooting digital, you gain the opertunity to develop your own custom film that always has the right contrast and tones that let you get that unique look you are looking for.

I call mine "SuperKODAK Persian Tri-X" hahaha
