I am looking at the used lens described in the title which has been characterized as " very rare" and the precursor to the "L" series. I could find nothing on this lens on the web and at my local photo shop. I found the 100-300 zoom but not one with a macro. Any insight would be appreciated. Cap

Well I don't it's a "real" macro, that is 1:1. It may focus closely though, but I doubt it will do 1:1.
I just checked the Canon Museum and couldn't find a 100-300 Macro. I did find one that focuses as close as 1.5m though.

I have seen several older EF lenses that are identical but some versions have 'macro' written on them and others don't.
It's entirely a marketing word these days as scottes hints at above.
By the way-the lens you are refering to is OK but certainly no better than the current version in any respect.Focus is especially slow i'm told

I have the above lens. The EF does not work, have to manual focus. It also has in the distance window an area labeled macro. Seems I can only focus at about 3 ft or so. Is this as close as it can get?

Canon made an L version of this lens that has stellar IQ. One of the first lenses with a Flourite element. Those are hard to come by though. I think I got the last one B&H had about six or seven years ago.
As far as used prices, I have seen people letting them go for around $250-300 and as high as $900 for some reason. That's 100-400 5.6L money

Thats not true. Canon made lenses with Flourite elements in the days of FD. Marked them with green lettering.
The early L's most of which had very similar casings and designs as their non-L counterparts aren't really worth having other than to collectors. The modern L's blow them away.

Cap - Welcome to the forum! I gotta wonder why you are even looking at this lens. There are so many other, newer, better choices available. What were you going to shoot with it? Budget?

I wouldn't expect any answers. "Cap" hasn't posted since 2005...
