hypothetically,

If the 50D had 1 stop better ISO performance than the 40D and the new 5D (whatever it may be called) had 1 stop better than the 50D, then in theory would that make ISO 12800 look like ISO 3200? (40D<50D)

I sure hope so, that would mean I can shoot 6400 would be usable in some cases! (depending on your noise preference)

If the 5D successor stays below 20MP it can have about 1 EV noise advantage over the 50D.
If so, then the highest native sensitivity (ISO 6400 supposedly) will show similar noise than ISO 1600 on a 40D.

The ‘pushed” sensitivities above the native ones will always have additional problems like banding and the like, so the noise performance drops more rapidly than might be expected.

I can just hope.. I can imagine the 58 1.2 + iso 6400 :D

That means great fun :P
