Can anyone help? A week ago as I was putting my memory card in, i realized that I had put it in backwards and bent the pin inside. The camera when turned on, is not recognizing the card. I spoke with a few repair shops, they are estimating $200-400 to fix. Any suggestions/ideas?

Well ur plan of action depends on ur camera. If ur camera is older and/or a low cost P&S camera then for 400 bucks u can buy a new one. Even if its realativly new, if its going to cost 400, u can buy a newer model rather then repair ur other one. If its around the same price, give or take 50 bucks, u might as well go with a new cam, no point spending so much to fix the problem. Or if ur cam aint worth a lot and u plan to buy a new one rather then repair, try ur hand at fixing the pin just incase u can get it to work. I messed up a pin on an old P&S last year and I used my mini PC repair tool kit and managed to bend it back in place, and the camera lasted me another 6 months before the pin gave way, and was totally broke. I still got the cam on hand but its only good if plugged in via USB and u take pics with the computer (which really has no purpose unless its a webcam enabled digital cam).
If you got a good camera, or one valued at over 400, then u may want to consider getting the repair done.

Camera is 1.5 old. It is a Canon PowerShots400. It was approximately $400.

if the pin isn't broken just bend it back with a little screwdriver.
if it is broken then i have no idea how to fix... probably time for a new camera.

If you do get it bent back into shape, it might be a good idea to limit how many times you insert/remove cards because the pin will be more susceptible to bending and breaking. As such, use the USB on the camera itself to transfer photos rather than relying on a card reader. For this to be practical, you may also want to use a larger capacity card so you aren't likely to run out of space on the card between transfers.

Buy a new CF slot for your camera from Canon Parts in NJ and replace it yourself. It costs about $25 shipped. Or if you prefer, sell your s400 to me for $50 and I'll fix it myself
Do a search for Canon Parts and you will find the phone # for ordering....

no need to buy a new cf slot, or send it to a repair place...
as said. take a small, flat head screw driver, and bend the pin back into place.

The pin may break depending on far it has been previously bent. Yes, I would try bending it back first, and if it works then great, but it will now take less force to bend the pin again if it isn't perfectly straight, thus resulting in a broken pin.
I would also recommend removing the battery from the camera before attempting to bend the pin back.

No, it doesn't. But it "does got" enough juice to damage electrical components in the camera if you accidentally cause a short-circuit by touching 2 (or more) pins together on the CF slot while attempting to bend them back into place.
