View Full Version : Which Cokin filter holder for S-R filters on a 24-105?

I'm buying a couple of Singh-Ray GND filters and want to go with the P series size rather than the 4x6 size. From what I can gather from the Cokin site, the P Filter-Holder will cause vignetting with the 24-105, so I would need to get the P Wide-Angle Holder which only takes 1 filter. The other option is to go with the Z-Pro Holder.
Questions:
1. Does the Z-Pro Holder take the P series filters or only the 4x6?
2. Is having only 1 filter slot a major problem?
3. What should I get?

1.) The P filters are too small for the Z-Pro holder
2.) I found it to be a problem...you cannot stack filters with a single slot holder
3.) Unless you're dead-set on the S-R filters, save your money and get a set of Hitech GND's...they're priced a lot less than the Lee counterparts and are an excellent value. I seriously doubt that you'd be able to tell the difference between shots taken with either filter brand. As far as the holder goes, if you decide to go with the larger filters I'd definitely recommend the Lee holder vs the Cokin Z-Pro. The Lee is only a few dollars more expensive than the Z-Pro, but a much better design.

Thanks...
Can I use the Lee holder with the P series S-R filters? The Lee holder is expensive; the Cokin holder is about $15 while it looks like the Lee holder is $75-100 and the adapter rings $30-40...

No...as mentioned earlier, they're too small. Have you checked into these at all? The P filters are about 84mm wide, while the Z-Pro and Lee holder are designed for 4" wide filters, or roughly 100mm.

I mentioned the Lee holder since you were considering the Cokin Z-Pro. Of course, the Lee holder is much more expensive than the smaller P holder, but compared to the Z-Pro its only $12-$15 more...a much better option for only a small amount of extra money. And if you're worried about expense, I'll still recommend the Hitech filters...the 4x5's are about $65 each, while the S-R P-size are closer to $100...the money you save on filters can go towards the the Lee holder and adapter ring. I've been using Lee and Hitech for several years and personally see no reason to 'move up' to S-R (unless I want a reverse GND).

If you haven't done so already, try this website for decent deals on the filters and holders: http://www.2filter.com
