I am looking for another/better sports lens. I usually shoot soccer and baseball. Currently I have a 2.8 70-200 -- I like it, but longer would be better....
Any suggestions? How do I tell "good glass" from cheap?

Price!
It depends on your budget of course, but there are a few lenses you can choose from. Canon's 100-400L IS will give you a nice zoom range and is well used by sports togs. You could also go the prime route and look at 300/400mm primes. The Canon 400 2.8L is the prime of choice and excellence for many but then you really are paying for quality with that one!

Get a 1.4 tele. Anything longer then 200@2.8 gets expensive. You could go with 300 F4 or 100-400L if light isn't a factor.

I can't tell for baseball, because I have never shoot it (baseball doesn't really exist here as sport), but for soccer, 300/2.8 is minimum. 400/2.8 or 500/4 are perfect lenses for soccer. But $1700 is way too low budget for this, so my suggestion is $300 for 1.4x converter, and stay close to goal.

Baseball = 300 or 400 2.8, depending on the park and shooting location.

You could look for a used SIGMA 120-300, may be a couple hundred more....
