I got myself a shutter release cable for the 300D the other day, I figured since it was an EOS it'd be the same on all of them. Turns out it's not. For some reason the plug's different on the 300D and the 20D. So much for my plans of taking photos of fireworks with the 20D tonight! :( Ah well, the 300D should do pretty much as well anyway. It's annoying though - hopefully I can exchange it at the local store I got it.

Tim,

The 300D uses a mini plug, many other Canon (D)SLR's use the special N3 connector.

It isn't too hard to wire a new plug on and if you want if done professionaly, there is a service for that.

Do a search under my posts and you will find a link. I had my Canon TC80N3 adapted so it can be used on either my 300D or 20D by swapping end plugs.

300D pretty easy to do , considering I just took a headphone plugin, wired it to a switch so that one was AE/AF, the other was shutter. This way I can plug a normal headphone cable ( male both ends ), into the switch, then the smaller headphone jack adapter on the other end, so that I can get as long a cable as I need in the future. And dending on the end that goes into the camera might be adaptible later down the road. I think it was something like Tip + Bottom connect causes AE-AF, and Tip + Middle = Shutter Release. At a later time I was going to try to draw up some circuitry , so that I can make an invalometer, since it was on my Powershot G3, but not on the Rebel, and the cable canon makes for the rebel, doesnt support that feature just on the 10D and up.

The 300D also uses the RC-1 remote release. Its only $25, has a decent range, and can do 2-second or instant release. Beats a wired remote hands down if you ask me.

Do I need to use the fancy and expensive TC-80N3 remote if I want a remote release cable for the 20D? That thing's expensive.

Is there any way to have the RS-60E3 remote I got for the rebel rewired so I can use that? I don't need the fancy features of the big remote. Or are there cheaper options in wireless or third party cables?

Canon makes a cheaper and simpler wired remote switch, the T 80 has an intervalometer (sp?) function, the other is a simple shutter opening control.

There are also some 3rd party units made in China that are really inexpensive, if memory serves, some on this list have bought them and have had good success with them.

They make both wired and wireless (RF) units.

Do a search on EBay.

I looked on ebay and found a generic remote made by Adidt Technology in China. I searched for it here on fotn and found a few people have bought from them and are quite happy with their purchase, plus the seller has 1800+ good ratings, so it looks to be a pretty good and safe buy. Thanks for your help Bruce :)

For the 20D you can use either the TC-80N3 or the RS-80N3. Or you can get creative and get an T3 adapter, if you have the older T3. I have read on the Inet that you can modify the extension cable to fit the N3 to a 300D.

I might end up doing that, I have a TC-80N3, and would love to use it on my EOS 7e.

Any reason you folks are looking for wired over wireless. I mean 20-30 foot range, no cables so even less chance of moving the camera, still with the ability to half-press to refocus, optional 2 second delay, conveniently attached to your strap so you always have it handy, and $25 for the RC-1.

In my experience wired release was always a big pain. So why put so much work into getting a wired contraption to fit?

I want a shutter release for the 20D, which doesn't have an IR receiver. I prefer wired because the latency is less... though how much less can vary and may be insignificant.

I bought a wired remote for my DRebel from Adidt and it works great.

That sucks. I wonder why Canon chose not to include one when it is present on the 300D?

So they could sell a wireless receiver perhaps? Or maybe they just ran out of space.
