View Full Version : Fire Fox 3, terrible.

Am I the only person on here who installed Fire Fox 3, and thought "what in the hell did they do to my favorite browser?" then un-installed it about 5 minutes later? I think it's horrible. It's too much like IE now. It's slow, a memory hog and just ugly looking. I downgraded back to 2 without hesitation. Only bad thing about going back to 2 is it's not going to be updated for too much longer, but I honestly don't care. I'm hoping Google Chrome will be out of beta and running like a champ before then.

It's weird. I love it on the Mac, hate it on the PC.

I've heard the same thing from other Mac users.

I've been using FF 3.0.1 on Mac, Linux, and Windows with no complaints. Everything is nice and snappy - not sure what issues everyone else is having.

FF3 is fine. There are some tweaks you can do to make it more back to the FF2 look, like getting rid of that new URL bar, etc.
Works great, uses less memory than FF2. I have FF open with multiple tabs, going to various different sites through the whole day. I've had this session open since 8AM and it's now almost 2PM. I have 8 tabs open and it's using 116MB. Not too shabby. With FF2 it could easily be much more than that.`

That's funny because it used more memory for me. I even tested it. I ran FF2 & FF3 both for one hour, 6 tabs, exact same web pages. FF2 was using nearly 35mb less memory.

The only thing I hate it the stupid drop-down address bar (switched it back to FF2 tho). Otherwise it works great for me.

FF3 kept crashing when I opened more than 1 tab. Re-installed FF2.16. Happy now and will wait quite a while before trying FF3 again.

Yeah, they made some changes, but I still like it much better than IE.

Yeah nothing wrong with FF3 on my computers I got it looking fairly sleek.
Only problem I am having is compatibility with some of my favorite extensions.

I like it. Not any problems here. The build way better than 2. The memory leaks are fixed. And the security is a lot better.

No problems here either. It did take a bit to get use to the interface changes but it's been stable and quick.

I use it on my Vista PC, an old Dell laptop running Linux and an old G4 Macbook.
It works perfectly on all 3.

I actually like FF3 better. FF2 was a memory hog on my computer and was always running slow. FF3 runs way faster now that it's installed. Only drawback, I lost 3 extensions that are not compatible...oh well, life goes on.

I do find it a whisker slower than 2, but still far faster than IE7.

I don't know if I'd go to terrible, but on my XP SP3 machine it does tend to gobble up more and more memory as time goes by. If I leave it open too long, then try to minimize the whole works, it seems to go in slow motion as it minimizes or maximizes the application.
For grins, I just did a little test. I had 4 tabs open, closed one, did absolutely nothing else, and the amount of memory it was using went up about 10%. Reloaded one of the open tabs to find there had been no changes on the page at all, and had the memory usage jump up again about 5%. Closed that tab, and memory usage jumped up again another 5% or so.
All told, that means that memory usage went from a little over 100K to a little over 125K for closing two tabs.
I used to work computer security for $$$, so I'm extremely reluctant to go back to an older version with a known limited support future.

Runs great on my new computer... haven't tried it on my others, though. I'm quite happy with it.

I love Firefox 2.0:)
But when I installed 3.0 and found there wasn't a little arrow next to the "back" button so you cant step back thru the history, I immediately removed it.

You just right click the back button and it does the same thing. I haven't decided yet if I like it, overall.

It's next to the forward button, and it steps back or forward.

Just got my MacBook Pro today, and installed Firefox right away. Not a problem at all (and yes it is better on a Mac, cleaner layout). Worked flawlessly on my Vaio also.

Running FF3, IE8B2 and Chrome on home / work PC's - IE8B2 is just slow on everything I've seen, FF3 is quick snappy although I do get it hanging on shutdown occasionaly, I suspect add-ons, and Chrome is bar far the quickest and slickest although has problems with various sites.
FF3 is my main that gets used, once Chrome is developed a bit more it might become my preferred, also depending on the various security issues that keep popping up on /. etc.

Lack of SmugBrowser (SmugMug extension) support for FF3 keeps me using FF2.

I put it on my laptop and it will be awhile before I move it to my desktop units. I hate the bookmarking drop down box they have and it will be awhile before my preferred extensions are compatible to FF3.

I have been using it since the release day and my only gripe is the spell check bug. Other than that it uses less resources, is faster and more streamlined this time around. I run vista ultimate btw with 4 gigs of ram in the laptop and a 2.6ghz athlon 64 x2 processor
As for it looking like IE then why don't you just skin it?
Here is how I have mine looking.

my only gripe is the spell check bug. That has been one of my gripes for quite a while. It is the cheesiest implementation of a spell checker I have ever seen.
