Has anybody used this product? Let me know what you think of it.

Its a Manfrotto 234 with a Kirk Clamp. Should be compatible with Markins and RRS Camera Plates.
Thanks,
Joe

Yep, I have it... (Ordered it direct from Kirk though).

Works great...

You can piece 'em together yourself pretty easily by buying the manfrotto 2323 seperately and then a quick-mount bracket and screw 'em together but I think this kit is cleaner. It's also guaranteed not to seperate.

I use it with a Wimberley plates (arca-type) and it works great...

It's not rated for much weight, but I use it with a 70-200mm 2.8 IS which is pretty heavy and it holds it rock solid...

I think you'll like it.

Thanks for your reply. I have a Markins head on my tripod and I didn't want to change camera plates to use my monopod. Joe
I could also get the shoe from Markins and build it myself but your right, it would be much more secure coming from the manufacturer,

Thats just the standard cheap Bogen / Manfrotto head with a kirk clamp on it. Most use that head.

I've used a Manfrotto 3232 (basically same as this) with a RRS clamp on top. Works ok, but the 3232 (or this) has limited ability to hold much of a load. Given that using this with a telephoto is probably most of what needs to be done, it is sort limited as a device.

Has anybody used this set-up with a 100-400 lens?

Well, the 100-400 is 3.0lbs and the load rating of this is 5.5lbs. With a Camera (depending on which one) you'd be either very close to the limit or over it. I think you would be overloading it since it is never a good idea to get even close to the load rating.

this things can slip easy enough on their own - at least the 3232 I own and the 3229 (RC2) both do.

Is there any other set-up you recommend for that lens and 40D and arca-type quick release tilt head? Without spending a small fortune.:)

What are you shooting? If it is field sports or even for most applications, you don't need anything. Just buy an A-S clamp and mount it directly to the monopod. That works for about 90% of applications and especially for telephotos.

If you are intending to use it to get portrait mode, then you don't need it either. Just get a plate to attache to the lens collar and you rotate the camera in the collar.

The 3232 swivel head will work fine with the 100-400. I use it all the time. Load rating and creep isn't as critical on monopod as it is on a tripod.

Thanks for your advise guys. I think the 3232 will do fine for my needs.

I like the Kirk MPA-1 but, if you feel that you need a more robust monopod swivel head with Arca Compatibility; look into the Really Right Stuff MH-01 with clamp. This has an amazing 75 pound capacity.
