View Full Version : Batteries in the rain...

I live just north of Dallas and I'm shooting a football game tomorrow at 11.
Mr. Ike is supposed to get here around 2 or so, but I'm assuming it's going to start raining before that.
I'm just going to bring my camera (leaving the bag and other gear at home (except for my optech rainsleeve)) and was going to put a spare battery in my pocket.
If it rains, (I myself will probably get soaked), will the battery in my pocket be ruined? (I know I should dry it off before I put it in.)

I've got the XTI .... one of my batteries went through the washer and luckily i caught it before the dryer. completely soaked in teh washer. dried it with a towel, let it sit for like 10 minutes. then tried it in the cam. worked like a charm.

hope that helps

Consider yourself lucky in this particular case. I haven't taken any Xt batteries (have a failed on) apart, but many modern batteries such as for laptops have a considerable amount of circuitry in them

In fact, I picked up an old Sony FD Mavica for cheap (3 bucks) thinking it would be fun to play with. I cut open the battery 'carefully' only to discover that I'd ruined the internal board. You can't just feed power to the battery--you get errors on the camera menu.

Lacking a waterproof bag, or pockets inside of a water repellant parka, in the future you could try putting the battery inside two layers of zip-locking (not sliding; they're porous) baggies before putting it in your pants pocket.
