Hi, I recently upgraded to the 40D, it will be here on Tuesday, woohoo!
Anyhow, I will be upgrading my memory, currently I am using the Extreme II. I was going to upgrade to the Extreme III but now I'm seeing they have the Extreme IV. My qurstion is as follows. Is the Extreme IV actually worth the extra money or should I stick with the Extreme III?
It would be greatly appreciated if you could please explain why and dont just say something like just because.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom,
Mike

No as the EOS 40D doesn't support the UDMA technology found on the IV cards so the camera won't benefit any. However if you have their Firewire card reader the transfer speeds will be a boost in speed.

I have a 1DMKIII and use 8GB Extreme III's.
I saw no reason for going with Extreme IV's.

No reason for the IV cards. The only thing they speed up is the communication speed to your computer and thats only if you have their fast memory card reader. The III cards are plenty fast to me though so I see no reason get the IV cards.

Speed tests that have been done and published on the web show that Canons benefit very little from memory faster than Extreme III. One area that Canons lag behind Nikons is in ability to exploit benefits of faster memory.

Yea that too. Except supposedly with the new 50D and probably with the 5D Mark II that support the UDMA speeds.

Extreme III are already at 30mbs, thats already pretty dang fast. I have some IVs, and even the transfer time between computer is not as noticeable (I have their extreme CF reader through a 1394b connection, which is the fastest you get).

Just be sure you get the newer III's that are 30/MB a second, and save your money.
Also, you can get the 16GB card until 9/24 for only $80-85 or so from Adorama (there is a rebate out from Sandisk, also applies to other cards not just the 16GBer)
Even the 1Ds, the difference between the Extreme III and IV is *very* insignificant. I've tested them side by side in two identical bodies.

The 1Ds3 already supports UDMA and timings are up on RG. Both SD Extreme3 ( 2008 ) and Extreme4 are UDMA. The RG timings do not show significant difference in camera, but a ~ 20-25% increase in UDMA card reader.
While Canon could increase the 50D and 5D replacement times for the Extreme4, if they were going to do it, I would suspect it would be for the eventual 1D and 1Ds follow ons.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the advice! Guess I'll be going to Adorama to take advantage of the rebate.
