Hello Everyone,
I am looking for a small and easy camera for my mom. What would be the best choice for under $300? I have a nikon coolpix and it is TERRIBLE, it takes such bad photos. I have a canon xti so i want to continue with canon products.
Thanks Everyone

I'm on the same boat. Looking for a P&S for my wife. I had a Nikon coolpix which sucks so bad. I think it's easier for people to help you if you list what you use that for. Any particular feature that you like or don't like.

I'd recommend getting her a S3 IS.
I had a S2, it was the best P&S I ever had, I miss it ... I upgraded to the S5... hated it, sold it. Apparently the S3 stands tall, I plan to buy another S2 for one of my 4 year olds actually who LOVED taking photos with it, since I can pick one up for 50 bux now... for his 5th birthday this halloween. ;)

I am not sure what you are looking for in a P&S camera, but i was also searching for a small and easy P&S camera for my sister, i ended up getting the Canon SD1100 IS. the main purpose of this camera is for my sister to take pictures of her kids at family outings as i do not always go with them.
Pros:
pictures are crisp sharp during daytime.
camera is easy to use, very simple (perfect for my sister)
optical IS is very helpful (i've seen a lot less blurry pictures with this camera)
Cons:
it doesn't perform very well in low light with flash fired and you will start noticing noise at ISO 400.
This is a great small and simple camera at a great price if that's what you are looking for.

Canon G9 is by far the best P&S for the money, until G10...

Seems like most of P&S's picture quality with bright light is about the same. low light & flash picture quality are the main issue with P&S. Is there any P&S with decent noise under high ISO and decent quality with flash?

Any of the Ixus ones would fit the bill, as would the sx series. Put them on full auto and you're away laughing.

And once more we want all the benefits of an SLR in a low cost compact package.
I'm sorry, but no.
You can have good high ISO performance (Fuji) but tbh you can't get good low light performance / bright light (high dynamic range) outside of a big sensor / fast glass.
Panasonic have just released a 4/3 micro system which may go some way to curing this, but to get low light shots with a compact you need a tripod, low ISO and a slow shutter speed. (imo)
Cheers.

SX100 same if you can still find one local. Give it till Christmas prices should drop. The SX100 dropped real fast. Canon was smart to stop selling the A720 and SX100 early as they are almost gone everywhere. Now they can charge more for the new models.

I just bought a Canon SD870IS. So far it is a really great camera. I am no expert. I joined this forum to try to learn more about taking good photos.

WHICH Coolpix? I used a Coolpix 4800 for 700 days and I loved every second of it, was sad when it broke down on me.
I picked the SX100 so I could get a superzoom.

i think the kodak easyShare's do a great job, but that is from my own experience, and not a professional opinion.

She (and you) might enjoy using the Canon A590 IS. The "upgrade" for this model is the A720 IS, but it's been replaced and prices have doubled on Amazon. The threads posted by A590 IS users have had lots of praise for this little camera. It even has an Easy mode, so everything is decided by the camera, except the flash setting, which you determine on or off.
