why so high ISO? my camera can only go to 800

High ISO, numbers game really.

Here's the facts, the areana has NO light, ok for the human eye, but next to nothing for a camera.

Badminton players can be moving really fast, thats disregarding the shuttlecock, which can be going over 100 MPH.

If you want any chance of a freezing the player and the shuttlecock then you need to compensate for the lack of light. If I was to shoot with your maximum ISO the shutter speed would be 1/60 of a second. How far does something move going at 100 MPH in 1/60 of a second? 100MPH = 160KPH approx = 4.444 cm/second = 4.444/60 = 0.0741 cm in 1/60th of a second = 0.7 mm in 1/60 of a second.

As you can plainly see from the picture the racket head has moved further than 1 mm at a shutter speed twice as fast, which can only mean that its moving a fair bit faster than 100 MPH. Which is good to some extent, helps to convey the movement.

So to answer the question, to freeze the action when shooting with no light, you have to open up everything. Really fast lens, f2.8 or quicker [smaller number / bigger hole letting light into camera], high ISO which makes the camera more sensitive to light and evaluate what is the least amount of shutter speed you can get away with to freeze or nearly freeze the action.

One extra point you will notice from my original post that I'd set my camera to Exp. Comp.: -1.0, so I was telling my camera that there was 1 stop extra light than it was reading, just to get a faster shutter speed. In some cases it was true because the player is wearing white, and not an 18% greycard shirt!
