Soo..
Lastnight i am out and about at the marina. Still trying to figure out my new camera ( Canon 1D Mark III ).
So here i was shooting some birds using my 70-200 2.8 L and this gentalman was standing beside me with a camera in his hands and seemed to be checking out what i was using.. I was not really ignoring him just in my zone doing my thing.
Well then i switched to my 17-40 F4 L and was taking some shots of the boats when i finally aknowledged him standing next to me and said "Hey how are you"
He replied "Nice camera what model is it" So i replied that it was a 1D series body he replied "Oh yea not bad for a semi pro body" I replied " Sorry its a 1D mark III not really a semi pro body its one of Canons professional series bodies"
He replied "Yea but its only what 8-10megs? I only shoot my Canon 5D almost 13 megs! and i am a professional so i know what i am talking about"
I kind of stood there and thought do i really want to get into this... lol
SO i looked at him and said "Well there is much more to a camera than there megipixels, and am also a professional and for my professional needs the 5D just can't cut it"
He replied saying "Yea there are a lot of Professional Amatures out there... There is nothing that my 5D can't do to meet your professional needs"
So here i thought to myself... "Professional Amatures".. Humm...
So i replied... " Your right.. Why in hell would i spend 5 grand on a 1D Mark III when i can buy your $2000 5D and shoot the Toronto FC ( toronto Soccer Team) using your 5D shooting at 6400 ISO at 10 Frames per Second."
he looked at me totally dumb founded... Replied to me saying "10 frames per second would be nice.. but come on like that is ever going to happen"
I laughed out loud... VERY Loud... and walked away mumbling "What a dumb ****... "
Sorry had to share / vent!

Yeah - pretty funny. I just chuckle at folks and conversations like that. You ask him for a business card or maybe a link to his site so you could check out his "professional" work? :D. I use a 5D myself, primarily for weddings and landscape, but I would NEVER compare myself to sports pros who do that sort of thing full time. Some people....thanks for sharing Mike - brightened my afternoon  - Stu

Yea i am not looking to put down a 5D... That will be my next buy.. holding out hoping the MarkII will be released soon :D
I mean there is alot that i can do on the 5D that i can't do or achieve with the 1D.. But when i weighed it all down it came to what i do primarly (Sports / Action and wildlife ) which the 1D can't be beat atleast not by a 5D :D
However i have been doing alot of portrait work and stuff and would love to get the full range of my wide lens with a 5D.

As soon as he said that 10 FPS is never going to happen, you should have demonstrated that it's not only going to happen, it's right there in your hand!

You should have taken his picture before walking away. I'm sure the noise of 10fps running would have gotten his attention...

"... There is nothing that my 5D can't do to meet your professional needs"
How about Track and Field competitions? For a discus-throw, the 5D could capture 6 or seven frames of the wind-up and another 4 or 5 of the launch and post-throw; roughly 12 frames. The 1D at 10fps would have 30 frames of the same throw. Sure, it's "spray and pray" but there's bound to be a better shot in the 30 frames than the 12 from the 5D.
I tried some baseball photography with my 5D. 3fps just doesn't do it. A 10fps camera would have caught the ball in the frame on nearly every swing.
Hell. I'm just talking fps speed.

Maybe POTN should have a business card. I do find hanging out on POTN you learn a lot quickly. But you never know....

come on guys - 1D vs 5D? Which one is 5 times better? They don't call them 5Ds for fun.
I just read a post about the comparable costs (in the view of a Ritz employee). 1D is $4000 for the body, the 5D must be 4 or 5 times that much. Right?

Absolutely...it only stands to reason that the more D's you got the better photographer you are....armature or profeshunul.

The sign of a real amateur is not appreciating the Kit of another photographer. Though I don't own a 1series body I do love seeing them being used. And I have used one myself on a special occasion. Your right he was a DUMB XXX. Just take photos and act like a paparazzi towards people like that.

No comment Don. ;)
And to the OP....you showed some great restraint. Congrats on that, and really having a "crappy" camera (yes, that last part IS a joke).

What's with some people? I could see the animosity if he was a Nikon fanboy. But he's driving the same car. No need to try to look better because he couldn't afford a pro body.
I may be a professional amateur photographer, but atleast I'm not a professional full-time a$$$hole.

Sounds like he is a Professional Amature, because he simply doesn't have a clue and has no intention to learn anything new... *shakes head*

*****UPDATE*******
So it's been a while but lone and behold i was down at the water front on monday night with my wife and we where just walking and i seen Mr.5D with a couple of teens. Seemed like he was photographing them at the beach front with there skate boards.
So long story short i walked up and with my 70-200 2.8 set to 2.8 at 6400 ISO set to H i was watching and waiting well he starting to shoot the kids riding there skate boards and it was funny cause i guess he was trying to catch the one doing a trick and i watched as the kid redid the trick about 4 times and they where looking at the camrea inbetween shots so i knew he kept missing them.
So i walked up about 2 feet behind him he did not even notice me well the kid started and just as i seen he was getting ready to start his trick i just pushed down on the shutter and held it.. 3-4 seconds straight... i swear i almost dropped my camrea laughing when no more than a few shots rang out from my camera and i thought he was going to hit the deck!
He looked at me and i said .. "hey remember me?" he kind of look stupid at me.. i said " Its me.. Mr.10 FRAMES PER SECOND" then i walked over to the kid showed him the 40 somthing shots of him doing his trick and the kids where freaking out from it.. keep in mind that high ISO and not really aiming to get good quality shots i thought they sucked but these kids loved them.
The one kid said they have been trying for 40 mins with this guy and he could not do it... So i handed each of the kids my business card.. wished Mr.5D a good evening and walked away.. my wife looking dumbfounded asked me what that was all about... I just chuckled!! :D

When I see a 1D shooter, I respect them since I know what they have bought and what is capable of. Without asking for a business card, seeing some pictures fully edited, I could never call someone a status, people these days.
You did the right thing. :)
