Hi,

Before I make the leap from my current site to EE, I wonder if someone could confirm best practice on image sizing?

If I opt for 3 sizes: (all longest length)
small=300p
medium=600p
large=800p

Can I convert my RAW archive to 800p once and in the Resize Image Editor 'downsize' to the smaller sizes using Imagemagick?

This will save me a shed load of work if possible!

Thanks

Yes You just prepare one size, EE wil resize all the other sizes for You.

But why have 3 sizes? There is already the microthumbs which are 43 pixels and the thumbs that are 110 pixels.

At least I can't see the use for Your medium size.

I would suggest resizing originals to 800, then set EE path resize method for that size as "NONE". This will make upload much faster as 800-sized image will not go though IM at all (only ftp transfer). Of course if you want to to watermark then you'd need to use suitable resize method.

I'm just converting my existing site to EE as well. What I'm doing is going back to my RAW files and processing them to 800p

As Pekka has suggested, I then upload the file and have 3 sizes - 800p with no resize, 600p resized and 400p resized

Mike, what would be Your reasons for having both 400 & 600 in addition to 800, microthumbs and thumbs? The size 600 seems to me to be redundant and to some extent also the 400.

Hi Tommy

I wanted to offer small, medium and large versions of my photos for viewing

Small because not everyone has DSL or cable, Medium because not everyone has higher resolution monitors or views web pages with their browser maximised, and Large for those who do want the best version of the photo.

Mike
