Bright photos on Canon A420

By the look of it, your electronics are gone. New camera? Take it back. In warranty? Send it to Canon. Over 1 year old? Replace it. It might be falling victim to the problem in the Service Notice we've stickied at the top of this forum. Certainly worth asking Canon about it.

Sadly it's two years old. It's not the Service Notice thingy because my model (A42*) isn't listed. The weird thing is that photos taken in-doors have an acceptable quality.

Don't assume that because the A420's not listed it's not affected. Do the symptoms look enough like the reported ones? Call 'em and ask about that, you've nothing to lose.

Try and adjusting the EV value to -1 or so and see if it helps.
