I see no point in buying aftermarket protectors. The screen cover that comes on the camera is extremely durable in addition to being cheap and easy to replace.

Agreed. The screen cover on the camera is really inexpensive to replace.

Anything that could scratch Canon's LCD cover will rip right through any soft plastic "protector-protector".

I've not taken any special care to avoid contacting my 20D's LCD protector, and it has absolutely no visible damage at all after several years of using the camera.

Adding anything to Canon's LCD protector would accomplish two things. The first is that it would make it more difficult to actually see what's on the LCD display. The other thing is that you would be totally wasting any money spent on the "protector-protector".

Everything that Skip said and that the LCD cover is very very durable and scratch resistant. On top of that they are very inexpensive.

you mean the 40D lcd screen already comes with its own screen protector from the factory?

The very tough clear plastic thingie that you can touch is actually the Canon LCD protector. The LCD screen itself is on the other side of the protective cover, and you cannot touch the LCD screen without physically removing the protective cover.

I bought a Giotto Screen Protector for my 30D and LOVED it... So when I got my 40D I picked one up for it as well. I have to say that with the 40D the thickness of the protector on the 40D actually interferes with the menu button.

Everyone says it is easy to replace the existing screen protector. How do you get a replacement one (direct from Canon) how much do they cost and how do you replace it yourself?

How cheap is it to get the Canon cover replaced? Mine is so full of dust that it's getting very difficult to see the right half of the screen. I'm sure my camera was constructed down a coal mine: the insides are filthy, despite it not being used in especially arduous conditions.

Here's a link (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=10852446) to a description of how to replace the screen of the 20D. I can't imagine the 40D will be much different. Replacement 20D screen cost $7. At that price it's definitley not worth using one of them horrible plastic things on it.

As my window isn't damaged (just very dusty inside) do you reckon that the screen cover can be reattached with the existing adhesive?

Thanks,

Everything that Skip said and that the LCD cover is very very durable and scratch resistant. On top of that they are very inexpensive. What they said. None of my covers are showing any damage after enough battering around that the 20D and 5D have extensive bare metal at the bottom back edge of the body, relieved only where the RC2 release plates protected the edges.

Thanks,If you're careful removing it and cleaning it (transferring dust, or solvent, to the tape will mean replacing it) you should be able to. If it doesn't survive, get some double-stick tape and use that.

It's all personal preference with these things. I like to keep my camera in its original condition and don't like to fiddle with taking off manufacture parts and replacing it. Calling Canon, wating for the replacement part to arrive = less time to shoot. I bought InvisibleSHIELD which comes with lifetime warranty so I know it's a decent purchase. It also reduce glare and fingerprint buildup so that's a good bonus too. "Anything that could scratch Canon's LCD cover will rip right through any soft plastic "protector-protector." True, but I think for the most part, LCD screen protector is better than nothing. It still prevents from having microscratches, or any scratches that arise from contact with keys, clothes, belt, whatnot. If spending 10 bux can provide you with the sense of security while you shoot, I say it's worth it. But I know you guys all worry about your equipment especially your LCD screens, why else would you be reading threads like this? It's your camera, do whatever that's needed to prolong its life.

The thing is, a scratched LCD cover does nothing to prevent you from shooting so you can go ahead and do whatever you need to do while waiting for the new part.

I honestly can't think of a situation where I'd let the screen get scratched. My camera either sits in a soft camera bag, on the top of my right hip, or is held to my face. Nothing sharp in any of those locations (except my nose, but that's a different story).

Hoodman (http://www.hoodmanusa.com/) makes several types of screen protectors. The simplest and least expensive are clear plastic stick-on LCD covers. (http://www.hoodmanusa.com/products.asp?dept=1058) They also make caps sized to fit various camera screens. (http://www.hoodmanusa.com/departments.asp?dept=1028) Inexpensive insurance for the unlucky and clumsy when the unexpected happens.

That's true, it's not like you can't read because of the scratches.
