Nice, I like the foreground too. The WB seems a little warm though.
You've been lucky with the weather, I'm still waiting for the skies to clear here, it's been raining for days.

Since it's getting cooler, I had to warm it up a bit ;)
The correct WB is around 4050K if you want to try it out yourself

Thank you all for the great comments.
Last night, the full moon was right behind me. So I guess it helped :)
I was hoping the the light would go in between the mountains. But I am never that lucky.
This fjord is the most photographed regarding northern lights where I live. I heard some other people taking pictures as well.
It's only 10 minutes by car so I can't complain :)

Another beautiful shot. In the other thread you said you set WB to Florescent? What does that do over AWB?
ArcticShooter
17th of September 2008 (Wed), 08:20
Then it set the WB to 3800 or so. So that the image gets a nicer, clearer and more color blue sky. The aurora doesn't change much. Not really that big a difference but the colors pops more. It darkens the outdoor lights from houses so they don't steals the image too much. I guess I can do AWB all the time and change it in ACR later. But that is one less thing to do in PP

Ah, OK, I guess changing it in AVR would be the same thing then. Never thought of that for night time shots. :)

Another great shot, but I do find the (car)lights distracting reflecting in the water, I would loose them but thats a personal thing.

Last night I was reading through the 7-point system by Scott Kelby, and one chapter was about doing reflection by mirror the sky into the lake.
I tried that and the original turned out better :)

Thank you. The northern lights have always fascinated me. Remember as a kid, laying in the snow and watching the sky, stars, meteorites and of course the aurora. But we lived in the countryside so there were no disturbing lights.

Beautiful shot!! I remember being about three, and my parents getting me up so I could see the Northern Lights in Southern Illinois. It is a rarity to see them that far south, but I still distinctly remember it! It was probably 1980 or 1981 I believe.

Seeing the aurora over a lake in northern Michigan as a kid is what fueled my interest in astronomy which led me into astrophotography today. It almost puts one in a dream state while watching this natural phenomenon. Your photo is among the best I've ever seen, spectacular in composition, color and clarity. I would have preferred to be there, but your photo is the next best thing and brings back memories of that amazing night many years ago.

Thank you for your comments. What is great with the northern light is that it keeps changing. When it is really active it is difficult to get a sharp image. It can sweep across the sky in just seconds.
I was in St.Petersburg, Russia this weekend and saw some great looking telescopes. Those where some expensive gear! I don't remember the names but I recognized some of the names from this forum.
It would be fun to try some astro photography some time.
Have to check if there is any active local group.

Thank you both. Hopefully I will have some more soon. Now I am at work and will not be able to take pictures until the 21st this month :(
Next time I will bring my camera!
I just started working on the Northernmost LNG site in the world. So I was unsure about the rules for cameras
Also check my Flickr for more northern lights pictures.

You need to become an Aurora tour guide!
Your photos are outstanding AS.
Something I've always wanted to see and photograph.
Are the Auroras still evident in late March?
I'm looking at a weeks Snowboarding holiday about then and was looking at Finland (Levi) or somewhere in Norway(probably Hemesdal) What are the chances of catching the Auroras there (obviously away from the town lights)
I would look at a long weekend but I'd be afraid of not enough days if there was bad weather.

Thank you for your comments. You will only see the northern lights above the arctic circle and that means Finland. That is a 4-6 hours drive from where I live. March is good but not April since it is getting lighter then.

Helge, not often, but some nights you can see them far below the arctic circle. I have seen them here and down in Illinois even. But, not too often, unfortunately. Here's a link I bookmarked a couple years ago (http://www.extremeinstability.com/04-11-8.htm), that some guy made in Nebraska. I'd have loved to have seen these. :)

I'm getting an 11-16 2.8 specifically for this :) I do some northern lights, maybe I'll post some up myself. I love the second image, that's definately far better than the first. The orange light streak reflection was a bit distracting, and the orange in general (though I realize what it does for the aurora) was distracting too and happy it was removed.

That was recorded in my area and further north.
