3 Years ago, last month, I started GKPE with this simple thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=76991&highlight=great+Kiwi+potn

Hey I thought, there are a bunch of a guys in the US who are all active POTN members getting together and taking some great photos.
I wonder if we can pull together something similar with Kiwi members.

The result has grown beyond anything anyone could have predicted.
All you have to do is search for GKPE to see how big it has become, how many Kiwis got involved, how much fun has been had, and how many great photos have resulted.

So here is to another 3 years of Kiwi POTN members getting together to take photos and do what Kiwis do best; be the nicest damn people in the world.

And to start it all off here is my favorite photo from all the trips we have been on:

Its more affordable to the masses. Also the 5D was 3 yrs old and there were never any issues with it. People wanted to see what canon would do to make it better.
Add to that Nikons new releases many were expecting ............

Most people seem disappointed as it doesn't have a particular bell or whistle that they where hoping for. But 90% of these these bells and whistles won't make better photos.
As for the people saying they will change to Noink as it currently has a camera that they like more... what is in 2 years then.
They are probably the people who change their wife when they see a new one with bigger breasts... then they change when they start to hang a little. ;)

Ill sell my 40D and go 50D, simply because I can...the cost of upgrade will be small after selling the other body. The extra 5mp for cropping and better ISO + a decent LCD is a fair trade for the few pennies the upgrade will cost. I can't however justify 5D for what I do, but it sure is nice looking.

Plus I don't have any kids, a house or anything else to pay for :)

My logic?

5k for a 5D MkII body (give or take), or 5k for a 5D (pre loved) and some good glass.

It's not rocket science.

Dave re the new 24L what was the major issue with the old one?

I suspect that issues with resolving power of the high end sensors either current or future may be behind that, but I'm just guessing. Canon guys haven't mentioned any reason at all. (In fact they're still technically to tell us it exists, no emails from Canon NZ to stores about it yet as is normal! :lol)

Why all the teasers over the 5D2 though. I don't seem to recall all that sort of fuss over the 50D or the MK3s. What's so special about the 5D?

From what I can gather and reading between the lines, the general feel about it seems to be that if you're viewing it as a camera in the traditional sense, then it's just plain very, very good, and continues the feel of the original 5D. The big hoohah is about the fact that it does open up possibilities that just didn't exist before. Quite whether that will prove to be as influential in camera development as they think remains to be seen, whether it's as important as the release of the 300D for instance, that kinda thing.

What I think will be happening is that image makers, content to work across the divide of still and moving images will be ready and willing and chomping at the bit to try and exploit the new possibilities. For me, as much as I can't see me using it, from the standpoint of having done a digital media degree, where any and all digital methods of producing work were embraced, I am interested by the possibilities and what the creative types can come up with. If it comes to be that the hybrid role it can either fulfill or begin to establish for future models opens new fields of digital media and artwork, then the release of the 5D2 will be a major, major thing in a few years time. That and the fact that as our rep bragged to me recently, the company is gonna take great delight in showcasing technologies that others have shown first, but actually doing it properly and making it work well as opposed to a half-assed effort. I suspect they're gonna enjoy sticking two fingers up at Nikon as they prove that they get the technology sorted first yet again. (Note I don't say that they'll end up using it to the best effect, as I still think the D300/700/3 lineup is the best range of serious cameras anyone's done in a while).

Bloody amazing what a huge Hoo Haa there is about a camera release.
Most people seem disappointed as it doesn't have a particular bell or whistle that they where hoping for. But 90% of these these bells and whistles won't make better photos.

I essentially said exactly this whilst talking with Tim/tonnes today. As a camera for taking pictures, a lot of the new stuff is irrelevant. As a tool to free up possibilities it holds potential.

If you ignore the hype the Mk2 actually appears to be a great landscape and portrait camera. 5D never was for action, which is what most people seem to be upset about.

Now that i know where to get my sensor cleaned, I'm quite happy with my 5D ;)

LOL at the sensor clean thing... :p

Your comments above though are some of the most relevant about the thing yet IMO. As far as I'm concerned the strengths of the 5D(mk 1) aren't obvious. It's a dust magnet. Its focus points were laid out by idiots. It's not got fast drives or lightning focus. It doesn't have weather sealing. None of which matters a toss.

The original 5D is so damned awesome because of what it leaves out in the pursuit of purity I think. It rocks for landscapes and portraits, and is acceptable at other things. It doesn't chase things it doesn't need, a bit like a Lotus car, engine, brakes, steering and a seat, all else irrelivant. A Lotus is for driving not relaxing in. A 5D is for shooting one main band of images, and it leaves out the stuff you don't need for that. It's that purity of purpose that makes it so special. As someone said recently, three years on, archaic in terms of technology compared to the rest of the range, it still produced arguably the best images of the lot.

So when people moan about no 8fps or no 45 focus points, they're moaning about stuff which isn't necessary for what the cameras strenghts are. They're possibly the wrong people for the camera. I personally think that the video won't be for me, but I admire what it might enable (and I think it's clever marketing and product strategy to include it on this and not others). What I also think though, is that if you strip back the rubbish and stuff to moan about, what's left may just well make the new one of the same breed as the original. Simple sensor, treated well, nice but simple tools to use it. You're the person left to exploit it.

I am interested to see what happens as people start to use it. If it remains dust free and takes the image it ought to, I'm in. ;)

well - i have found out today that my balls are not trying to kill me. Which is a slight relief... but this does mean that i now need to find out what is...

So its a case of back to the drawing board.

I love a piece of gear that is practical. I like ruggedness. Things made to take knocks and weather are my cup of tea.
my car is an octavia scout. Audi Allroad look alike. 4WD, a bit rugged, but still a station wagen that can do 200 on the autobahn if I push it.
I have a casio sea pathfinder watch. Built to handle the knocks.
Our family compact camera is a Minolta weathermatic, which used to be waterproof to 5 m. Often after using it on the beach, I rinsed it under the tap in fresh water.

So Weather sealing is something that would appeal to me. I use my camera in adverse conditions like in snow storms, rain, on beaches, so knowing that the weather will stay out is nice.

400D... Twelve hours of photos in the freezing rain with a plastic bag on my head... ahhhh Relay for Life, hours of fun for the whole family.

Killed my feet though. Couldn't walk properly for a few days after.

Pfffft weather sealing.

As for the no 8Fps and less than a million autofocus points (unforgiveable!)... one has to wonder how these "photographers" would be taking photos if autofocus and motor drives hadn't been invented yet.

Give them all rangefinders and see them run about like headless chickens.

I also love how they complain about it having too many pixels, but we all know they'd complain if they kept it at 12.

Ultimately I think you will find that these nay-sayers will be Rebel users mostly, who will have never owned (nor will probably ever own) a 5D or equivelent. They're missing the entire point of the camera and the major (and many more subtle) improvements it seems to offer on paper.

I essentially said exactly this whilst talking with Tim/tonnes today. As a camera for taking pictures, a lot of the new stuff is irrelevant. As a tool to free up possibilities it holds potential.

If it remains dust free and takes the image it ought to, I'm in. ;)

I agree......but I am a little confussed about the inclusion of video in this purist landscape\portrait camera though. I would have thought it was more suited to the general purpose 50D or PJ 1D rather than the 5D? It confuses what all the other features of the 5D Mk2 suggest it was designed for. (ie. landscape\portraits)

I don't think it is a bad thing to have in a camera, I don't know if I would use it personally or not, I just find it a little puzzling that it is in the 5D, but not the 50D given the type of cameras they are. And I'd be very suprised if it is not developed further for the next 1D.

I would love something like that, but bacically I need a studio in winter & my garage is way too cold.

That looks cool. I used to live a couple of hundred metres away from there in Victoria Ave.

Mmm, lots of factors, I am working around 80 hours a week at the moment as well as planning the wedding, plus we live 30 mins out of town. I also like to spend a good few hours ona shoot, being still pretty inexperienced I tend to lean towards overshooting and experimenting. Then there is the times I do have free are usually during the week when others work....
80 Hours a week!!!!
Are you crazy!. I work 50 hours a week (plus 5 hours travel) and find that to be pretty exhausting! It is a long time since I worked 80 in a week, but only when I worked weekends too.

The plan is to knock it back a bit after the wedding and such. probably to 60 - 65 and free up some time for myself. At the moment I do 3 x 12 hour days with the insurance company, 10 - 15 hours design work for my clients 35 - 45 hours on my sales business. Yeah, it wsn't that long ago it seems that I had short hours... Its all good though, means I can pay the mortgage, eat most days and buy the odd toy here and there. Has allowed me to build up a 1/2 decent kit in a fairly short time. But its the usual story, lots of time and no money to buy the toys or lotsa of new toys and no time to play with them :|

I have the Manfrotto 190 Pro. It is pretty stable and smaller and lighter than the 550. I like the smaller size and lightness when it is on my back, but when I am using it I always have to stoop a little. Decide what size you will be happy with then decide how much $$ you are willing to part with to make it lighter.

After staring at the Manfrotto site for hours one day I also came to the same conclusion. After finding out pricing in New Zealand I decided to keep using my 70's Velbon which is built to last forever. Its not light but is 'feature' rich to the point where id have to spend far to much to get something of the same caliber/build for the little usage it gets.

Here's what I did today - two different shoots.
Those are great, I love the eyes of that Baby.

1 min exposure
Beautiful . Love the colour.
Composition is naf. Horizon is too centred and it's crooked.

REVIEW: Practical photographys "Get started in landscapes" CD.

I know it isn't the best photo mag in the world, but I was given a subscription as a present.
This month is a free CD rom titled "Get started in landscapes".
I watched it today and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is pretty basic, but in my opinion very professionally put together and beautifully filmed.
Video quality isn't the greatest sometimes, as full screen it is a bit pixilated, but for the price of a magazine I think it is worth it.

Ok for you Peter.

This 1 is 1 I am happy enough to print. This is the quality I expect of my self on a bad day.

Woops I see foot prints and may need trim at top to make it 1/3 (see Mark I listen)

Lots of cool photos. Interesting stuff from Peter, liking the sideways hair, though time for a new location? ;) Cool stuff from Stefan, though not too hot on the blown highlights. Nice stuff from Tony, but step away from the saturation slider. :( Shane, I like that as a nice family image, but I wonder if it'd have been better with an angle showing a bit of face?

Me? I am completely totally in the bad place tonight. The model from last weekend who lit such a huge fire under me and my pictures, has been round for dinner as she leaves on Mon. Really gutted, like genuinely down about it. :(

I agree with the saturation comment on Tony's photo.. maybe drop it a tiny bit.
It was probably the last time I can use that location till next summer as it is getting too cold here now.
What do you mean the model is leaving?? Isn't that always the case!

When do we get to see more from that shoot Dave?

She was due to be in Wellington for some time, but due to various reasons of her own, leaves for some far flung corner of NZ on Monday morning. Things last week went so well for me that I was totally looking forward to shooting with her more, and kinda developing myself and ideas, and getting really stuck into things. Helps that she's an amazingly cool person too and a riot to be around. Quite down about her moving on, both on a personal 'missing a new friend' thing and a photographic thing... :?

More photos coming soon hopefully, maybe tomorrow, got some edited but been so busy this week not really had time to wade through them.

On the plus side I did come home today with a shiny new Kona mountain bike and some associated bits. Try and get back into my former love of cycling and get fitter/allow me to eat more. :)

I agree, although in context (he was shielding his face from the sun to look at a flying kite) it kinda works. Would have been better if it ere not though, but I'm good at breaking "the rules"

Yep, as above I wouldn't have minded but as a candid I'm quite happy with it.

Buck up lad, you'll be right as rain and you have loads of support here :D

Cheers guys, yes saturation needs to be tonned back.

Peter your model photography is getting better and better Im envious.
I never did have the "artisic" touch.

Dave I understand where your comming from. I always wanted a model who was keen to meet often to try ideas and allow me to develop and learn. Never happened. 2 shoots was the most.
Oh for a model wife sometimes

Model photography has got to be the most fun and frustrating of all photography. Alas more frustrating than fun..

Lil Miss thanks for the link. I will get some details off to the woman who I know maybe intrested in some maturnity pics.

WOW! I LOVE this shot... one of the best I have seen for a while, great work! That is seriously poster stuff! Heh - I seem to say that about your work a bit though don't I :) The only thing with this image is the frame for me personally, I don't think it does the image justice at all.

I was wondering what was wrong with that image, now i I know all to well. You are wise beyond..........enough with the cliche's.

Oh hi New Zealand, what's going on here?

Welcome child.

Also when is the next meet, mini meet, or 'Tha WTGNMASSIVE' meet as I sorely missed out on the last one due to some fail circumstances, if a Wellington one needs to be orginised im sure between me Daveblownhighlights and a few others it could easily be done.

Havnt done much photography latley in part due to been board with the same old spots. Need to get further out of Auckland just dosnt inspire me any more.

Tony, have you seen the book: Excellent Short walks in the North Island? Really good stuff i there

*subscribes to new thread

Neat stuff Aaron!

I went to Auckland camera to look at tripods today.......very frustrating. I want a decent tripod, but I can't bring myself to part with $400-500 for 1!

Any recommendations? Must be suitable for holding the 5D with 70-200 f2.8 (and maybe something a bit bigger) but not be to big and heavy to cart around.

Mines the 3021BPro or the local equivalent is the 190BPro (not sure why the different model numbers here and in the US. Really good and stable... though can be heavy on long walks. Have you had a look at www.feisol.com (http://www.feisol.com)?

Along for the ride

Cool!

9 pages & I haven't decorated our new room yet.

Wow, IR photography? Did you convert one of your toys?

Here's what I did today - two different shoots.

Nice shots! Makes me want to convert my garage into a studio too!

Nice one though as the others say -- so unlike you to post a wonky horizon...

Ok for you Peter.

Oh hi New Zealand, what's going on here? :)

Welcome. Here is the Kiwi quarter of this fine forum, where sarchasm reigns, humour is demanded, the odd tantrum ensues, and all made up of entirely half-decent folk. ;) Oh, and a load of them here are pretty good with cameras too. Stick around, ignore it when the feathers fly, as the rewards are worth it. :)

Blown highlights...ill show you a blown highlight  :p

I was wondering what was wrong with that image, now i I know all to well. You are wise beyond..........enough with the cliche's.

I am not wise! Just taken enough shyte by now to realise the same mistakes I made/still make.

Also when is the next meet, mini meet, or 'Tha WTGNMASSIVE' meet as I sorely missed out on the last one due to some fail circumstances, if a Wellington one needs to be orginised im sure between me Daveblownhighlights and a few others it could easily be done.

Was there a last one since the dawn thing? :? Any meet either needs to be a social or have a decent theme going on. No use all piling up at the zoo or a beach or Te Papa or whatever then saying our hellos and then staring blankly at eachother whilst we wonder what we ought to photograph and just taking any all rubbish for the sake of it. Need an idea or a theme to shoot I think.
